"Category:Bangkok" as subcategory of "Category:Provinces of Thailand"[edit]

  • Quote from w:Provinces of Thailand: Thailand is divided into 75 provinces (Thai: จังหวัด, changwat, singular and plural), which are geographically grouped into 6 regions. The capital Bangkok is not a province but a special administrative area and is included as the 76th province since it is administered at the same level as the other 75 provinces.
  • Quote from w:Administrative divisions of Thailand: Thailand is divided into 75 provinces (Thai: จังหวัด, changwat) and the metropolitan municipality Bangkok (กรุงเทพมหานคร, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon). Bangkok was one province until 1972, making Thailand a 76-province country. Each of Thailand's 76 provinces is divided into districts - as of 2006[update] there are 877 districts (อำเภอ, amphoe) and 50 districts in Bangkok (เขต, khet).

Due to Bangkok's special status within Thailand, and due to its size, it has aspects that are similar to those of a province of Thailand. Also within Wikimedia Commons, in categorising certain media, this special aspect of Bangkok is obvious, for instance in Category:Buddhist temples in Thailand which seems to be moving in to a subdivision of Thailand in to 75 provinces and Bangkok. I have inserted this text from w:Provinces of Thailand "This list also contains Bangkok which, although not a province but a special administrative unit within Thailand, is administered at the same level as the other 75 provinces." into Category:Provinces of Thailand to emphasize the inclusion of Bangkok. - Takeaway (talk) 21:44, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
