About the proposed move:
the name of the corresponding cat for Benedict XVI follows the same logic: Category:Benedictus XVI as cardinal. --Túrelio (talk) 20:55, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

agree, that was the reason.--Kresspahl (talk) 22:50, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Both these anachronisms should be corrected. A papal name has connection with papal function, as well as the civil name with the title "cardinal" appertain to the cardinal's period of the lifetime. I agree that the papal name as the newer one should be precedenced to the older names as the main category of the person but the subcategories should have corresponding names, not anachronistic. --ŠJů (talk) 11:25, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Against. One of the category goal is to ease research. To have to know the name of the pope to find more cardinal without browse the first hierarchy is annoying. This is also coherent with former popes photographies and name use. Archive photo descriptions says Jean-Paul II, when he were bishop for example, to ease identification. --Dereckson (talk) 15:29, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
I think, anachronic category name doesn't contribute to easy searching. --ŠJů (talk) 21:39, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
Sure, rename both categories. Who will (anachronistically) search for “Franciscus” or “Benedictus XVI”, can ever find the main person’s category and will be able to get the ultimate destination in one click. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 21:56, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Keep. The category is o.k., there is no mistaking what is meant. --AndreasPraefcke (talk) 10:57, 20 March 2013 (UTC) Furthermore, it is not neutral if one subsumes "Franciscus" under "Bergoglio" (non Catholics would see the office as a subcategory of the person), or "Bergoglio" under "Franciscus" (a maybe more Catholic view, the person less important to the office). --AndreasPraefcke (talk) 10:59, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

It is a standard solution that the older identity (name, purpose) of the subject (building, organization etc.) is a subcategory of the latest one. Both these names (the original and the latest) are official according to both civic and church point of view. --ŠJů (talk) 02:07, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
