Talk page history[edit]

The earlier text below has been moved from Category talk:Ice age 410k-380k BP which has been deleted and left as a re-direct.--Canoe1967 (talk) 05:58, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Wrong category[edit]

{{en}} This category does not make sense. 410k-380k BP was not an ice age. It falls within the Hoxnian Stage, an interglacial. The introduction says that it corresponds with the Anglian, which is a British term for the ice age from 478-424,000 years BP, and the Kansan, which is a defunct North American term which has now been merged into the longer Pre-Illinoian. I suggest deleting it and moving the files to category Ice Age, which (in my opinion) should really be called Ice Ages. Dudley Miles (talk) 15:45, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

I don't speak pre-history. I asked en:wp reference desk science to pop over for input though.--Canoe1967 (talk) 20:27, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
I agree with Dudley that there seems to have been some snaffu with the dating here. See for example Wikipedia:Timeline_of_glaciation. I suspect this was in fact meant to be labeled an interglacial era, but even then the dates don't match up perfectly with the mean estimates for the transitions between the relevant glacial/interglacial periods. If someone wiser than I can think of a correct name we should be able to just have admin rename it then. Should do it the normal way by edit warring on it until we are all blocked and then seek consensus after our blocks expire?--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:22, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
Hah! Well, the matter is a little complicated. The description of the category include several different regional glaciations that, in terms of dating are either as inconsistent with eachother as they are with timespan presented in the current title or are near-synonyms. However the contents and subcategories all seem to be consistent with any of them, but particularly germane to the Anglian glaciation. Perhaps the best way forward would be to strike the last three elements of the description and change category name to "Anglian glaciation" (479k-424k BP). Alternatively you could leave the description as is and change the title to "Ice Ages (680k-300k BP), but in my opinion this would result in a less intuitive, accurate and useful category. Would using 'Glacial eras' in the title help at all. This may include the warm bits and cool bits that are included in the time period and any sub-categories? I don't speak pre-history so I don't know if I can be any help at all.--Canoe1967 (talk) 04:46, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

The timing of ice ages and interglacials within the Quaternary period, the last 2.58 million years, is still disputed and subject to revision, so whatever time limits we pick are liable to become outdated. It does seem to be accepted that the Quaternary as a whole is a glacial preiod, see Wikipedia:Quaternary glaciation, but it included interglacial periods. Wikimedia Category:Pleistocene has 3 sub-categories of ice ages and 3 interglacials. (Pleistocene is the period from 2.58 million years ago to 11,700 years ago, and the period from 11,700 years ago to present is called the Holocene. The Quaternary is the two together. Just to complicate matters the terms Quaternary glaciation and Pleistocene glaciation are used to mean the same thing.) I suggest deleting the 3 Ice Age categories and merging them into category 'Quaternary Ice Ages' and the 3 interglacials similarly into 'Quaternary interglacials' (or making the existing categories redirects if this is easier).. You seem to be be an expert on pre-history Dudley. I would suggest that you mention the best way to re-name everything at the village pump and have admin do it en masse. Just provide a bluelink there to this talk page to make it easier for them. I doubt anyone would object.--Canoe1967 (talk) 23:39, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, but I do not understand village pump and bluelink. Can you advise what I need to do. Dudley Miles (talk) 18:08, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Commons:Village_pump#Two_minor_issues is a blue link to the village pump. They may pop by here or you can state your changes in that section.--Canoe1967 (talk) 20:09, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

I would like to nominate this category for deletion as discussed above and as it is now empty, but I do not know how to do this. Dudley Miles (talk) 16:47, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
I will speedy it.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:30, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks very much. Can you do the same for Category:Interglacial 600k-450k BP. Dudley Miles (talk) 17:39, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Break[edit]

I think I have them both in now. Huge backlog so it could take a while.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:56, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

✓ Done. And you are very welcome.--Canoe1967 (talk) 13:56, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
