Renaming from Category:6101 Kurihama (ship, 1980) to Category:JS Kurihama (ASE-6101)[edit]

I propose the above renaming because:

  • We already have over a hundred JMSDF ship categories which are consistent with JS xxxx (ship code + pennant number) style, and this category should be better with the same format.
  • The ship code ASE is as equally important as the pennant number 6101 to distinguish this ship from others.
  • The current 6101 Kurihama is inappropriate, because the ship's official Japanse name is not "6101 くりはま".

The easyest way of naming categories of ships in Commons is according what can be red on the hull of a ship. Even not specialists can find a ship that way. Because I assumed the ship wasn't painted with the pennant number due to mainetance and that the number had to be painted afterwards, I created the category with this name. If this didn't happen, renaming Kurihama (ship, 1980) is a good solution. Prefixes like JS are language dependable and sould be avoided. --Stunteltje (talk) 17:12, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
The number (and the name in the stern) had been made invisible because the ship was already out of service when photographed.
The merit of " JS xxxx (ship code + pennant number) " format is that the ship type is recognisable at first glance even by a novice in this field. We have already discussed this issue before. If anybody searches the ship with the keyword Kurihama, he/she can reach Category:JS Kurihama (ASE-6101) quite easily. So, what's the problem? --トトト (talk) 18:25, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

So, may I move this as proposed? --トトト (talk) 14:33, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Please realise that more than 20.000 ship categories can be found with the format Category:Name, ship (year of completion). So if the ship isn't active for the government anymore, but still has her old name, the best renamed category will be Category:Kurihama (ship, 1980) and not a category with a pennant number. Ships out of military service usually don't have pennant numbers. --Stunteltje (talk) 18:23, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Whether the ships is active or not is irrelevant. If there is anyone who searches this ship on commons, it is probably because that he is historically interested in it. And in that case the pennant number (and code) becomes essential, because the ship does not have an IMO number as other civilian ships have. If it contains ASE-6101 , it naturally becomes more recognisable than just a "ship" . And the category should be consistent with other ships of the JMSDF already created, whether it belongs in the past or the present.
A user does not need to be a specialist, off course. But a category creator should be familiar with this field, and always consider how it becomes a usable database even for the specialists. And there are de facto exceptions of the ship naming guidelines for military ships. If there is no clear objections, I would like to rename it to Category:JS Kurihama (ASE-6101) after another 14 days. --トトト (talk) 01:29, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
✓ Done I have sent the renaming request at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. --トトト (talk) 09:32, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
