Smaller neighborhoods[edit]

This category is perennially overcrowded, and its pictures are periodically diffused into Category:Lower Manhattan, Category:Midtown Manhattan and other neighborhood cats, and also into topical cats including Category:Churches in Manhattan, New York City and Category:Manhattan, New York City. Some of these cats also become full, and new subcats are added, sometimes in a disorderly fashion. I intend to continue diffusing, and to bring a bit more order to the existing category tree, for example by moving the cats of smaller neighborhoods into Category:Neighborhoods in Manhattan, New York City and into bigger neighborhood categories as subcats.

However, I also propose to make a lot of new little geographic categories without basis in neighborhood tradition but only based on major streets. Thus there will be a Category:Manhattan between East 42nd and East 59th Streets, a Category:Manhattan between West 34th and West 42nd Streets and others, each covering about half a square mile of this photo-crowded island. These little cats will be for all kinds of pictures of those places, though of course the various churches, skyscrapers and any other classes that have their own Manhattan-wide topical cats will retain them. Is this a good idea? Jim.henderson (talk) 22:02, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

request move[edit]

Who came up with this strange format of "Manhattan, New York City"? Neither the article nor the category in the English wiki or any other language is named like that, see here for example en:Category:Manhattan, en:Manhattan, es:Categoría:Manhattan and fr:Manhattan. Request for this to move to a normal "Manhattan". Gryffindor (talk) 19:40, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

 Oppose See en:Manhattan (disambiguation). --Foroa (talk) 18:35, 19 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose Pleasant though it would be if Commons could be more like Wikipedia, the needs differ and call for more explicitness in catnames here. Also it's better for all 5 Boros to have the same format, and we've already got a Category:Queens that means something else. Jim.henderson (talk) 06:08, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Support Blatantly obvious as the most likely search target for "Manhattan". Even we agree. Wknight94 talk 17:27, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
