Category's name incorrect[edit]

Please change this category's name appropriately, to Nave Sha'anan. This is how it's pronounced (I'm a native hebrew speaker, a senior editor on the HebWiki). Thanks. Orrling (talk) 00:23, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What point is there in 'opposing' when one doesnot know the actual language in which the word in subject is in fact used ? What point is there in actively trying to prevent renaming items into their CORRECT lingual form while one supports oneself with an evidently INCORRECT phase of spelling of which en:wiki is, as we know, full? Please refer to the ACTUAL CORRECT way of pronouncing he:נווה שאנן and then see with your position. /Orrling's talk 17:50, 8 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Google throws up at least a dozen different transliterations of this name. Several claim that it is not pronounced Nave but Naw-veh. Rmhermen (talk) 04:33, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is exactly the moment to NOT consult with Google, Facebook, iPhone-Autocorrect or your taxi driver, but to rather check out for the ACTUAL HEBREW pronounciation in a reliable HEBREW source and for that sake this would only be right to consult with people who speak fluent Hebrew. It is absolutly fine to make mistakes on Wiki; it is wrong to perpetuate them. Orrling's talk 06:40, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Commons role is to serve the 700+ wikimedia projects. So we better stay in line with the names they use. And yes, most languages have some gaps between the spoken and the written version. This category has been created by a native hebrew speaking person, so if you want to get the name changed, change it at our customers sites. --Foroa (talk) 07:06, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The correct lingual form? By what standards are you calling it correct? You can't simply naively transcribe from the pronunciation into the Latin alphabet; it doesn't work that way. This clearly is not a phonetic transcript, which would look something like /nave ʃaʔanan/. If you're using an official transcription or transliteration, please name it; then the question becomes whether we want to commit to that for all Commons. If there is signs written in Latin script naming this place Nave Sha'anan, seeing those, or at least being told of them, would be helpful.--Prosfilaes (talk) 11:38, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good, following what your predecessor said about first dealing with "customers"' mistakes, an organized rename session has been started – if I may invite you here where at the end there's also linx for Latin script. Orrling's talk 12:12, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The usual transcription into English is "Neve" or "Neveh"; I really don't know how "Nave" would more accurately indicate the Hebrew pronunciation to English speakers, who would naturally pronounce it as a monosyllable (like the nave of a cathedral). "All pages with prefix" search on English Wikipedia turns up at least the following: Neve Ativ / Neve Avivim / Neve Barbur / Neve Dan / Neve Daniel / Neve Daniyel / Neve David / Neve Dekalim / Neve Efraim / Neve Efrayim / Neve Eitan / Neve Erez / Neve Granot / Neve Hadassah / Neve Harif / Neve Ilan / Neve McIntosh / Neve Michael / Neve Mivtach / Neve Mivtah / Neve Monosson / Neve Nunatak / Neve Ofer / Neve Sha'anan / Neve Sha'anan, (Jerusalem) / Neve Sha'anan, Haifa / Neve Sha'anan, Jerusalem / Neve Sha'anan, Tel Aviv / Neve Sha'anan (Haifa) / Neve Sha'anan (Jerusalem) / Neve Sha'anan (Tel Aviv) / Neve Sha'anan (disambiguation) / Neve Shaanan / Neve Shaanan Street / Neve Shalom / / Neve Shalom (disambiguation) / Neve Shalom – Wahat as-Salam / Neve Shalom – Wa-?at as-Sala-m / Neve Sharet / Neve Sharett / Neve She'anan / Neve Sheanan / Neve Tzahal / Neve Tzedek / Neve Tzedek Tower / Neve Tzuf / Neve Ur / Neve Ya'akov / Neve Ya'aqov / Neve Yaakov / Neve Yam / Neve Yamin / Neve Yarak / Neve Yaraq / Neve Yerek / Neve Yereq / Neve Yerushalayim / Neve Zedek / Neve Ziv / Neve Zohar / Neve yakov / Neveh Dekalim / Neveh Erez / Neveh Monossohn / Neveh Shalom (disambiguation) / Neveh Sharet / Neveh Tzedek / Neveh Tzuf / Neveh Yaakov / Neveh Zedek

By contrast, "Nave" prefix search turns up nothing... AnonMoos (talk) 05:36, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, the name needs diffrentiation too![edit]

See here: We now need to both change the erroneous pronounciation of the place's name as correctly used in Heb, and add the diffrentiating "_, Haifa" to the cat.'s title since theres two other (albeit minor) places of that name outside Haifa. Thus the page's name will be Category:Nave Sha'anan, Haifa. Thanx, Orrling's talk
