Move to Pedestrian crossings[edit]

The Wikipedia article uses en:Pedestrian crossing, so by policy, whe should do so as well, unless there are good reasons for Commons NOT to follow the Wikipedia usage. One of the reasons Wikipedia does NOT use "Crosswalk" is that it is a very US-specific word, where other countries seem to use it less or not at all. Also, there are a number of disambiguation issues , as seen at en:Crosswalk (disambiguation), while "Pedestrian crossing" is pretty clear. Cheers, Ingolfson (talk) 08:22, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Of course, subcategories would also be aligned with this changed category name. Ingolfson (talk) 08:23, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
The conformity with en:Wikipedia is a good reason to move. But there are also differences and disadvantages. At en:w we have only one article with relatively short name. But here at commons we have tens of subcategories with various adjectives and specifications. The one-word term is more handy when it is used in a more-word term like "Raised crosswalks". But I'm not against the proposed moving. The terminology is non-uniform (UK, Singapore, India) and we should to unify them. Should footbridges and underpasses be subcategories of "pedestrian crossings" in every country? --ŠJů (talk) 04:21, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
For the sub-categories like "raised crosswalk", I do see the usage "raised pedestrian crossing" both in reality, and as consistent with the remainder of the changes - so I have placed those into the move proposal as well. Ingolfson (talk) 21:34, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
As for over- and underpasses: Good question, ŠJů - general usage (as I understand it) is that footbridges and underpasses are NOT considered crosswalks / pedestrian crossings. They are types of bridges and tunnels. But they CAN sort into appropriate other categories like Category:Pedestrian infrastructure, in parallel with pedestrian crossings, instead of below them - does that sound right?
