Rename proposal (withdrawn)[edit]

{{Move|Category:Rolling stock ferries|Bring in line with the "Rolling stock" cat structure, avoid issues with "train" or "rail" as per discussion on talk page.}}

  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose to rename to "Rail ferries"; it does not sound right to me. Other opinions ? --Foroa (talk) 11:16, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support Though possibly, we could rename to "Rail transport ferries" instead. The main reason I consider "train ferries" inappropriate is that the rail cars that make up such a ship's/boats complement are often assembled just for the ferry journey (either by ferry timetable - everything that's there goes on - or according to the "let's wait until full" system), moved onto the ship by a shunting locomotive that does not go along, and then "disassembled" again at the destination where a different locomotive (often electric compared to the often diesel-powered shunter) pulls them away. Then there's smaller ferries that are too small to take a full train anyway, like File:Riverside-south-69th.jpg. So not all what is on one of these ferries is a "train". • I understand your logic but the main objective of the ferries is transporting (parts of) trains but not rails. The rails are just some accessory means of accomplishing that job, so not intuitive at all for commons users.--Foroa (talk) 06:58, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
      • "Rolling stock ferry"? Changed the request. Ingolfson (talk) 04:16, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
        • Better, but change really needed ? --Foroa (talk) 08:23, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
          • "Needed" is a different word from "preferable". I consider it preferable to move. It would also allow us to move the category which is somewhat incongrous within the "rail transport" top cat to the "rolling stock" top cat, where - being a vehicle amongst other vehicles - it would fit better in terms of logic in my opinion. • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose I can't see any necessity to rename Train ferries, word that is understood worldwide and also by non-rail-enthusiasts. But who knows what "rolling stock" would be? If you absolutely need another name, the only matching term would be "Railway ferries"... And then, this category is absolutely wrong placed in rolling stock (where would a "normal" user seek a train ferry?). I can't see a necessity to "clean" the rail transport category.
