Weather maps by date[edit]

So, I was browsing the overly huge Category:Weather maps and I wondered why we don't have Category:Weather maps by day which I subsequently created... then, I looked at an image and saw that a template created its information. I was going to arrange them by day, or start to so that they are manageable and useful to someone maybe, if you are trying to look up weather and you want to browse that as it is now it's completely unmanageable. I was thinking of nesting it like Category:Weather maps -> Category:Weather maps by date -> Category:Weather maps 2005 -> Category:Weather maps May 2005 -> Category:Weather maps May 14th 2005... something along those lines to make it manageable to use. How can we do this with a template being used for information generation? Grenavitar 00:07, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Weather maps is indeed very large. I'm not really a fan of all these weather maps, I'm not sure how often, for instance, the weather in Australia on the 154th of April at 0611 (UTC) will actually be used. I suspect it was useful on the 14th of april, and then never again. The category scheme would need to be far more elaborate and break it down by region, for example: Category:Weather maps of Europe, 2005 -> Category:Weather maps of Europe, May 2005, Category:Weather maps of Europe, 14 May 2005, and then the same for all other regions of the world. -- Joolz 00:43, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I figured you'd do date and then all region maps could be under one date. This would only be like 5 regions at 4 times a day? that's about 20 or so maps in each category... which is not too cumbersome... having the thousands we do now makes having a category useless. I think this actually could be useful for projects to know how things were on a specific day. So, I wouldn't want them deleted... just organized... which a boy should be able to do. (I messaged the bot controller about this) Grenavitar 00:57, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I believe there is a plan to increase the number of areas covered. For instance, the Europe map doesn't actually cover all of Europe. Categorization by region will make it easier to sort these. -- Joolz 18:57, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • please, could it be possible to use the iso date ? Alvaro, 2005-05-25

Quality and Usage[edit]

First of all, these weather maps are comic like and they're of no use if your really interestet in weather (isobars of air pressure, rainfall, wind directions etc.). But that's not the real problem. The real problem is to find a place for images like Image:Wetterkarte 9. & 10.12.1887.jpg or w:en:Image:Weather_Fronts.png. What's with weather map theorie? What's with high standard weather maps some one could use to improve w:en:weether map? --Saperaud 21:52, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What's the use of these images?[edit]

I do understand that there may be a need for keeping historical weather information. But isn't it massive waste of bandwidth and storage space to keep big JPEGs with nothing in it except a handful of temperatures? These images should be created automatically on demand from archived, compressed data. --Afrank99 13:13, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I comepletely agree, why do we have to store old weather information in images ? I do not see the point. I would be happy to see them deleted. /Daniel78 14:06, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
