Symbol support vote.svg Support : none ; Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose = several ; Symbol neutral vote.svg Neutral = none - Clearly no consensus exists to promote at this time, and per Archtransit's statement "I would like to wait for another 12 hours (12:00 UTC 18 January 2008). I am requesting to be an administrator for the sole purpose of protecting images for 24 hours while they are on the English Wikipedia main page, particularly the DYK section. Currently, the DYK images are not protected. This weakness has caused vandalism. See .

I have no intention of doing any other administrative actions. It is much faster and simpler to protect the images rather than download it to Wikipedia. Sometimes, admins are in a hurry and cannot devote a lengthy period of time to DYK tasks. This is why DYK is often late. Streamlining the protection process by making me an administrator helps.

I am aware that I do not have the usual qualifications of contributing to Commons. However, I am an admin in English Wikipedia and I can verify that this user is the same as the admin. See where I mention Commons administratorship.

This is my English Wikipedia RFA and comments made there.

Thank you for your kind consideration of this request. Please try not to be too harsh because of my previous lack of involvement in Commons. Archtransit 21:51, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

I would like to wait for another 12 hours (12:00 UTC 18 January 2008). If there are no support then I want to withdraw. Thank you for your consideration. Archtransit 00:02, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose I do not think this is a valid reason for adminship. There are over 1,000 sysops on the If one a day can't upload the image to the wiki and protect it then it's an problem, not a commons problem. Mønobi 22:17, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose Truly sorry, but you've only been an admin on for 7 days and only have 4 edits on commons. Gain experience as an admin and work here too. RlevseTalk 22:52, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
DYK is suppose to be updated 4 times a day. I have updated it as often as 2 times a day. If you don't wish to make life easier for English Wikipedia, you have the power to oppose this request. I have already noted that this request is unusual. Archtransit 22:58, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Some of us do want to make life easier for en.wp. It's just that there are more experienced people who can do that work. --Boricuæddie 23:03, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose — I disagree with Monobi's comment above. IMO, Commons job is to host free images primarily for our sister projects and protect them. Therefore ==> Commons problem. Now on to Archtransit. I oppose this request because, while I agree that some image protections should be handled here, there are many en.wp admins, as well as admins from other wikis, that could handle the protections and have experience here at the Commons. Sorry. --Boricuæddie 22:54, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose First day here? Sorry, but much more experience here is needed in order to gain my support. Experience means uploading images with correct licensing information and all that mumbo-gumbo, participating in discussions, reviewing flickr images, patrolling newimages, etc, etc. More experienced administrators are always available to do protection requests in terms of helping the sister projects. 哦,是吗?(O-person) 00:30, 18 January 2008 (GMT)
  • Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment There are 40 people who are admins on both Commons and enwp. Maybe there just needs to be a slightly more organised approach. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:12, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose Setting aside the fact that he has absolutely no experienced, he doesn't understand the blocking policy (blocks are preventative, not punitive]]. See's block log. Maxim(talk) 02:59, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
    • Presumably you are referring to his en:wp block log ? Let's be careful there not to assume too much. But it does give me pause as well. ++Lar: t/c 03:21, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose per above. __ ABF __ ϑ 10:34, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

  • In light of the recent vandalism to DYK images, I agree with this user's proposal to protect images directly here to save time and prevent vandalism. --Boricuæddie 21:55, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
  • I have to point out, though, that the only actual time being saved would be the time required to upload an image at enwiki once every 8+ hours. Seems negligible at best. And it would only be saved when Archtransit is the one doing the DYK update, unless this is a new standard where every admin at other wikis is being granted conditional adminship here. If so, count me in too. —Wknight94 (talk) 22:09, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
  • I expect that notion would be relatively poorly received by this community. ++Lar: t/c 23:56, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
  • (edit conflict) I propose we create an "official page" like User:Zzyzx11/En main page to protect images appearing on the Main Pages of our sister projects. --Boricuæddie 22:11, 17 January 2008 (UTC) P.S. I never said I supported this request...
  • But you'd still need to be a Commons admin to update the page here - which is kinda the point. —Wknight94 (talk) 22:39, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment — BTW, could you please add {{Babel}} to your userpage? Thanks in advance! --Boricuæddie 23:01, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment Before cascading protection was introduced, adminship here was more useful to help with DYK, but I do not believe that is still the case. You just have to do things in the right order when updating DYK at en:wp and everything will be fine. I would prefer to grant adminship to people that are here because they want to help Commons... (see also Commons:List_of_administrators_by_adminship_status_in_other_Wikimedia_projects for reference, we have more admins here that hold en:wp adminship than any other kind of adminship) ++Lar: t/c 23:56, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
    • PS at the risk of w:WP:BEANS (but it is common knowledge anyway), protecting an image here is not a foolproof way to prevent vandalism. It needs to be protected here AND there. ++Lar: t/c 23:57, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
      • No actions on can prevent a new image being uploaded on Commons with the same title. It is necessary to prevent this either to protect the image on Commons, or to upload a local copy to the English Wikipedia while the image is on the main page. As I understand it the latter option is not that arduous - but then I just protect the image here... :-) WjBscribe 04:35, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
        • That's what I am driving at. It's not hard to upload and protect the image there, really it's not (the harder part is remembering to undelete afterwards IIRC from my times updating DYK). And if you ONLY protect it here, a vandal can STILL upload it there anyway if it's not protected there (although with cascading protection there is SOME help I think).... ++Lar: t/c 18:39, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
  • Can we withdraw this RfA, or at least stop feeling good about ourselves because we oppose by the bucketload? I've left a note on his talk page listing three ways he can get an image protected here relatively quickly for the task he wants to perform, there really is no need for this anymore. Giggy 08:03, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
    • Why don't you write that up and make it widely available? I do agree with you on the pileon opposes as well. ++Lar: t/c 18:39, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
