The system currently recognizes 224 administrators. If that is not the last number in the list above, there is an error in the list.

Technical

Administrators are users with the technical ability on Wikimedia Commons to:

  • delete and undelete images and other uploaded files, and to view and restore deleted versions
  • delete and undelete pages, and to view and restore deleted revisions
  • protect and unprotect pages, and to edit admin-protected pages
  • block and unblock users, individual IP addresses and IP address ranges
  • edit less-restricted interface messages (see also Commons:Interface administrators)
  • rename files
  • add and remove usergroups
  • configure Upload Wizard campaigns
  • delete and undelete specific log entries and revisions of pages
  • import pages from other wikis
  • merge the history of pages
  • modify abuse filters
  • not create redirects from source pages when moving pages
  • override the spoofing checks and title or username blacklist
  • send a message to multiple users at once (massmessage)
  • use higher limits in API queries

These are collectively known as the admin tools.

Community role

Administrators are experienced and trusted members of the Commons community who have taken on additional maintenance work and have been entrusted with the admin tools by public consensus/vote. Different admins have different areas of interest and expertise, but typical admin tasks include determining and closing deletion requests, deleting copyright violations, undeleting files where necessary, protecting Commons against vandalism, and working on templates and other protected pages. Of course, some of these tasks can be done by non-admins as well.

Administrators are expected to understand the goals of this project, and be prepared to work constructively with others towards those ends. Administrators should also understand and follow Commons' policies, and where appropriate, respect community consensus.

Apart from roles which require use of the admin tools, administrators have no special editorial authority by virtue of their position, and in discussions and public votes their contributions are treated in the same way as any ordinary editor. Some admins may become more influential, not due to their position as such but from the personal trust they may have gained from the community.

Suggestions for administrators

Please read Commons:Guide to adminship.

Removal of administrator rights

Under the de-admin policy, administrator rights may be revoked due to inactivity or misuse of sysop tools.

Apply to become an administrator

All intending administrators must go through this process and submit themselves to RFA, including all ex-administrators who are seeking to return to their previous role.

First, go to Commons:Administrators/Howto and read the information there. Then come back here and make your request in the section below.

  • After clicking on the appropriate button and creating the subpage, copy the link to the subpage, e.g. "Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username", edit Commons:Administrators/Requests and paste it in at the top of the section, then put it in double curly brackets (e.g. {{Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username}} ) to transclude it.
  • If someone else nominated you, please accept the nomination by stating "I accept" or something similar, and signing below the nomination itself. The subpage will still need to be transcluded by you or your nominator.
Use the box below, replacing Username with your username:

Voting

Any registered user may vote here although those who have few or no previous edits may not be fully counted. It is preferable if you give reasons both for Symbol support vote.svg Support votes or Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose ones as this will help the closing bureaucrat in their decision. Greater weight is given to an argument, with supporting evidence if needed, than to a simple vote.

Promotion normally requires at least 75% in favour, with a minimum of 8 support votes. Votes from unregistered users are not counted. However, the closing bureaucrat has discretion in judging community consensus, and the decision will not necessarily be based on the raw numbers.

Symbol neutral vote.svg Neutral comments are not counted in the vote totals for the purposes of calculating pass/fail percentages. However such comments are part of the discussion, may persuade others, and contribute to the closing bureaucrat's understanding of community consensus.

Purge the cache Use the edit link below to edit the transcluded page.

Requests for adminship

When complete, pages listed here should be archived to Commons:Administrators/Archive.

  • Please read Commons:Administrators before voting here. Any logged in user may vote although those who have few or no previous edits may not be fully counted.

Scheduled to end: 15:05, (UTC)

I've been on Commons for a few years, most of my work is in aviation and Soviet history. On English Wikipedia I was awarded editor of the week and train new editors. The reason I am filing this is because a lot of the work I do is ""pre-upload"s (with permission from an administrator), ie, uploading stuff with speedydelete tags and then adding the filename in the undelete-by-year category so that they can be undeleted when copyright expires. Adminship would make this process a lot easier - I could delete the pre-uploads myself and saving other admins the time of dealing with them, and for files listed in the undelete categories that need an additional piece of information added to the page (ex, an unidentified person in a deleted photo is identified), I could briefly undelete them, add information to the filepage, and then redelete instead going through a tedious undeletion request and having to explain why it just temporarily needs to be undeleted and re-deleted again.

I have uploaded my own work (mostly photos of aircraft and maps created with basic photoshop), as well as many public domain photos from history.

I have filed a couple deletion nominations for works that are blatantly copyright violations or are violating Commons policy like Commons:Deletion requests/File:Züleyxa Seyidməmmədova (rəngli).jpg or items with lots of information like date and source lacking as in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Crimea propaganda.png, but I generally don't file deletion requests for other people's photos that much, and some of the work I do is not a purely admin-based task, ex, compliling lists of photographers by year the copyright for their work expires and tracking down public domain photos. The reason for this admin request goes back to the pre-upload process and the need for minor edits to files in the undelete-by-year categories, and I hope that I can become an admin to do that.

I have a pretty low rate of copyvios on the wiki - while on rare occasion I have mistakenly gotten the copyright status of something wrong and then requested it be deleted (like this photo that appeared in Ogoyonek without an attribution during WWII but I later found an attribution to in a 1944 newspaper), it is generally quite rare, and I am one of the few editors that ever checks the Soviet magazines, postal cards, regiment honors boards, and newspapers to find a publication date, and a lot of the deletion nominations on my talkpage are total BS (like from a person who was pretending that the mil.ru website did not have the note on it saying "© Все материалы интернет-портала Минобороны России доступны по лицензии Creative Commons Attribution 4.0", a person who kept forgetting about Evelina Mambetova's comment on Instagram saying that she released her photo under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, people who think that 42x54 px is not de minimis, and my personal favorite - the worry about an invisible non-existant author attribution in a magazine page.

As an admin I will not interact with other users very much, just will be using the admin tools to conduct maintenence of items in the Undelete by year categories. --PlanespotterA320 (talk) 15:05, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

  • Symbol support vote.svg Support. --Túrelio (talk) 15:19, 15 July 2019 (UTC) I know PlanespotterA320 mainly from her above mentioned "pre-uploads" of historic images, that will become free in some years, which is a valuable work for Commons (and the Wikipedias). Also her understanding of some eastern languages, such as ru and uz, is useful IMO.
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support. --1971markus (⇒ Laberkasten ... ) 16:09, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

@A.Savin: Are you suggesting PlanespotterA320 is a Russavia sock..? Confused.png - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:35, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
I don't suggest anything and I don't mention by name those who don't deserve that much attention. --A.Savin 21:41, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support and I would like to write a few words to PlanespotterA320's defense:
    1. She has 133k edits. She is a sysop on uzwp since Aug 2018. She has experiences. Knowledge of minority languages is a plus.
    2. Searching her username in VP and AN archives returns nothing. (PlanespotterA320 has never been renamed.) DR archives have 300+ mentions. While it is true that she has not participated in VP and AN discussions at all, it also means her edits has never been a subject of debates. A sign of good behaviour.
    3. The nays above are largely based on her attitude, removal of message templates and canvassing.
      1. Notice her charged comments and edit summaries were related to File:Polina Gelman.png and other files, which stemmed from User:Jcb's deletion of a file apparently without SD tags or DR. And Jcb went on to nominate {{Mil.ru}} for deletion and escalated the situation, because he didnt trust the creator of this template and hence the template itself, even though the Russian govt website was readily accessible and the CC-BY-4.0 copyright notice was clearly visible at the bottom of the website. deletionist idiots who never bother to read a damn file description. Her tone might sound unpleasant, but she merely spoke of facts.
      2. User talk archives can be set up right now if she is willing to.
      3. She has explained her canvassing and I would give her the benefit of the doubt. Who would solicit votes in plain sight if they had known the consequences?--Roy17 (talk) 17:35, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
So you call it a 'fact' that users like BevinKacon and myself would be idiots? So you are not much better than the subject of this vote then. Jcb (talk) 17:41, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
@Jcb: no, the fact is you (and probably others involved) are someone who did not bother to read a file description.--Roy17 (talk) 17:44, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
I do not need to read the file description if a user starts removing deletion tags from their own uploads. Jcb (talk) 17:48, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
When you add a deletion tag to an item from a well-known free content website that clearly states that their content is under a permitted licence and has given over 100,000 images to Commons, and do not come up with a good reason, people tend to assume it to be vandalism or trolling. Escpecially when you keep saying "no source" yet a url is in the "source" parameter.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 17:55, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
@Jcb: your comment just shows you are the one unwilling to cooperate here. First in Jan 2019 you deleted a file without speedy deletion tag or deletion discussion, when that file had a working URL to its source,a legitimate Russian govt website: special:permalink/313675790. Then in March 2019 PlanespotterA320 removed the tags because the problem the tags were based on had been addressed. They were not no-source because she added the URL. Starting a bureaucratic DR has no added benefit. On the contrary, if you Jcb thought that the source was not legitimate, you should be the one starting a DR. Yet you did not do it in Jan, nor in March!--Roy17 (talk) 18:03, 15 July 2019 (UTC)

  • I thought it was fine ask the users we worked with for their votes - after all, on other Wikipedia projects I have gotten requests to vote "Support" for promotions from users I have trained and worked with. How else are people supposed to know about the voting without spreading the word? And for the talkpage, page history can be viewed easily, so archiving is redundant. The presence of unsuccessful and even silly deletion requests (like from person who didn't understand that mil.ru releases content under the CC-BY-SA 4.0 licence despite the statement on their website) should not count against me, especially considering that it was a long time ago. And I strongly suspect everybody here has made an edit summary or comment a long time ago that they are not particularly proud of.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 16:47, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
  • I don't know what globally-banned account A.Savin is reffering to, but I have never been permanently banned before, and a checkuser can show that. I once got temporarily on enwiki a long time ago for a Brezhnev joke, and I got temporarily blocked on ruwiki more recently for editwaring to remove a small amount of very biased anti-tatar content that went against wikipedia rules.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 18:02, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
  • I applaud the positive contributions you have made but I am concerned by some of the things highlighted by other users above. However, my starting point is the following question:
"Does the candidate have a need for the admin tools?
My default assumption is that you do not need the sensitive tools in the admin bundle. I see several fragments from your comments here that relate to the "needs" question.
"Adminship would make this process a lot easier - I could delete the pre-uploads myself and saving other admins the time of dealing with them, and for files listed in the undelete categories that need an additional piece of information added to the page (ex, an unidentified person in a deleted photo is identified), I could briefly undelete them, add information to the filepage, and then redelete instead going through a tedious undeletion request and having to explain why it just temporarily needs to be undeleted and re-deleted again."
"The reason for this admin request goes back to the pre-upload process and the need for minor edits to files in the undelete-by-year categories, and I hope that I can become an admin to do that..."
I do not think this is a good reason to be an admin. I don’t want to get into a discussion about the merits or demerits of "pre-uploads" but suffice to say I don’t particularly agree with uploading copyright-protected material to Commons, whatever the ultimate motive.
"I have filed a couple deletion nominations for works that are blatantly copyright violations or are violating Commons policy like Commons:Deletion requests/File:Züleyxa Seyidməmmədova (rəngli).jpg or items with lots of information like date and source lacking as in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Crimea propaganda.png, but I generally don't file deletion requests for other people's photos that much..."
Others may disagree with me but deletion nominations (both regular and speedy) are at the core of Commons admin work. Please have a look at COM:AB for the kind of work that we need admins for. If you are not particularly interested in these areas, I don’t see a need for you to have the tools.
"...a lot of the deletion nominations on my talkpage are total BS..."
Without a doubt, some deletion nominations generally do turn out to be frivolous. You are entitled to your opinion about the ones on your talk page but this mindset ("total BS") does not lend itself to being a good admin.
"As an admin I will not interact with other users very much, just will be using the admin tools to conduct maintenence of items in the Undelete by year categories."
You are not obliged to interact with others as an ordinary user, although we highly encourage discussion and collegiality. However, I think for an admin to not interact with users is a fundamental obstacle to remaining an admin.
I do not expect any answers or responses to these points but I felt it necessary to give reasons for why I cannot support this candidacy at this time. -Green Giant (talk) 21:03, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
@Jianhui67:, @1989:, @Herbythyme:, @BevinKacon:, @A.Savin:, @Rschen7754:, @De728631:; Is it worth deneying adminship needed to carry out historical preservation over a few annoyed comments from a long time ago at somebody thought to be a troll/vandal? Rules to become an admin used to be much more lax, and I am sure, every single person here has an edit summary that they regret. In fact, I doubt any editor with even half as many edits as me hasn't gotten annoyed once.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 21:59, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
Like yourself, Rtcp is an experienced Commons member, and they are far from a “deletionst idiot” or a “troll/vandal”. Plus, almost two months is not a long time and a DR is not a competition. You “win” nothing as far as I’m concerned. Making excuses will not make things better here. 1989 (talk) 22:22, 15 July 2019 (UTC)
