Nearly 30,000 old maps found in the British Library's Flickr stream

[edit]

Launched with a live event at the British Library on October 31st, Wikimedia and the British Library and OpenStreetMap are trying to identify all the maps in the Mechanical Curator collection, a set of 1 million images extracted from digitised 19th century books. Read more here.

For Flickr galleries of all images from the Mechanical Curator collection that have been tagged with "map", see here (full-page) and here (inset).

This page shows the number of remaining book entries with  Untagged maps?   link templates, for each index page below. Choose one of the pages, and help us to tag all the maps and reduce the number of pink templates to zero.

Please also add your name to the Participants list on the talk page.

Georeferencing phase: See Georeferencing status page.

+ 29304 map tags added since Friday 31 October, 08:00 UTC

Method

(Note -- you need to be logged in with a Flickr account on Flickr to be able to add tags. The tags can be found on grey buttons below the image on the Flickr image page. An 'add tags' link is located to the top right of this cluster.
There is also a keyboard shortcut for this on Flickr: "t".)

First, open any one of the index pages linked to on the left, and choose any part of it.

Open the pink  Untagged maps?   templated link for each book entry for that part of the index, to go through to the Flickr page for that book (from which anything already tagged as a map should have been excluded).

Scroll down the Flickr page. If it includes maps or ground plans,

  1. first edit the wiki entry, copying-and-pasting-and-changing the {{UntaggedMaps|sysnum = nnnnnnnnn}} template to add a "HasMaps" template {{HasMaps|sysnum = nnnnnnnnn}} before it, which adds a maps link;

  2. then go through the page on Flickr, open each map (or ground plan) and tag each map image on its Flickr page with the word map.

  3. then, once there are no more maps to tag, edit the wiki entry again to remove the "Untagged maps" template, leaving the "Has Maps" template in.

Alternatively if there were no maps (which will be the case the majority of the time), simply replace the {{UntaggedMaps}} template with the words no maps.

Additional tags, as well as the tag map, that the British Library has requested are:

  • split -- if a single image contains multiple maps
  • conical -- if the map is not on a simple rectangular projection
  • world -- for maps which display the entire world on one sheet
  • rotatec -- for maps which need to be rotated clockwise
  • rotatecc -- for maps which need to be rotated anticlockwise

This page (which should update every quarter of an hour) will count how many {{UntaggedMaps}} templates have been removed.

For any questions and comments, there are some answers here, otherwise feel free to start a new section on the campaign talk page.
