Possibly unfree file, lots of confusion about the author and license. The linked source only provides a claimed author's name, but no proof that the file is licensed under current terms (CC BY-SA-3.0). The author (stqism) has described that the "original author is unknown" and that the original author said to "do whatever he wants" with the image, which could fall under public domain or another license. Arguably, the file is also being used on the project homepage (the legal status for that remains unknown for me). https://archive.installgentoo.net/g/thread/40445107#p40449131 109.201.154.204 04:58, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The creator of the original logo image was an anon on /gd/ who donated it for the good of the project. A vectorized version, the one you're upset about, was made by another anon. And the updated .svg that replaced it was an edit by stal, a dev (see the file source).
And no, the file is not being used on the site, that's yet another version, in .png format. You can check the source. This entire project has been an exploration of pseudonymity and distributed people working together. It is simply not practical, nor even desirable, to trace every permutation of every idea that flows through. If anything is certain it is that this logo concept is unique and was created for the Tox project. Promctagonist (talk) 06:06, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that there's no proof of permission. It is required for all submissions. "Stal's edit" is derivative work and doesn't make the file any more free than it already is. Take an example, you can take any proprietary file and crop it or otherwise make a derivative work based upon it. That shouldn't still make it free. Regardless, the current image also misrepresents the logo. I don't doubt it's unique and created for the project, but image sources and licenses must be verifiable. 109.201.154.204 15:36, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This is a Tox icon development thread archive. https://archive.foolz.us/gd/thread/86081/ This is where the specific idea of the logo was first mentioned as far as I can find. This poster says that the "The hole in the padlock can also be a person in a speechbubble." https://archive.foolz.us/gd/thread/86081/#86375 This post in the same thread is where another anon did that. https://archive.foolz.us/gd/thread/86081/#87186 What proof of permission do we need? The logo was obviously created explicitly for Tox. Promctagonist (talk) 19:41, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
