Uploading two properly cropped, higher quality versions of some Houston photos

For some reason the cropped version used a lower res version even though a higher res version had been uploaded before

Request: Would anyone be interested in uploading the higher res, properly cropped versions of the photos above? The two cropped versions don't seem to be the highest res possible.

Done For the Rice Hotel image it seems the uploader of the low res image not only used a lower resolution but also applied some sort of filter. I'm not sure what the purpose of that file is, but a higher res crop already exists and is being used. For the Rice institue image, I did as you suggested and recropped and rotated the image using the previous high resolution upload. Auguel (talk) 00:27, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

Cover of Collier's magazine from 1924

Request: Hello. I orginally uploaded this picture several years ago. An icon of same is in the article "Paul Martin (illustrator)." Also in another article somewhere on Wikipedia. It serves to explain how Martin worked as an artist, to give his work a 3D appearance. Anyway, the outline colors don't blend together that great. Notice it's far too light along the left margin and in a large upper left area. Just a tad/tiny too dark along bottom and a lower right area. I have Gimp (image editor), but can't figure out how to blend the colors together all along the edges. If I darken the too light areas, then the areas about the right color in lower areas, becoming too dark. I'd really appreciate help in adjusting the coloring better on this image. I made an attempt. It's quite a tricky "background" to work with because the variations tend to "hit the eye" differently at different zoom levels, but see if my latest version is anywhere near what you are looking for. If not, feel free to revert me. -- Begoon 05:44, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

@Begoon: I reverted the picture by mistake under file history. Oh, well, that doesn't matter as it didn't do anything. I should have instead just clicked the "reload current page" icon in upper left (to see recent changes). Okay, onto the touch up. That's an improvement. It certainly blends in better, and changes that unnatural white color, to more natural lite tan (for a Collier's mag cover). I thought it could be somewhat tricky. I could always later just very slightly darken the image on my own, but will likely just leave as is. It certainly removed that awkward spot in mid-lower right edge where the color shades didn't quite blend together. Thanks. JimPercy (talk) 06:37, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

I'm going to revert it to the best of my versions (in my opinion) in that case. I'll also put an extra version on the end with more contrast (darker midtones). Obviously you can revert yourself to whichever you prefer, and, as you say, if you want to make overall brightness/contrast tweaks now with GIMP that should be easier for you now that the overall levels are more "consistent". @PawełMM: I noticed you added a "other versions" tag in "Summary", with a pic icon. I don't recall Commons Graphics Dept. touch-ups being marked that way before. What happens is that there is duplication in all the categories listed between double brackets when editing. Example: click onto the "Categories" line at the far bottom of page that's titled "Collier's, 1924" OR "1924 in art", and two near identical icon pics show up on this cover. Perhaps this is just the new way of marking "non alteration" touch ups. JimPercy (talk) 15:01, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

@PawełMM: Okay, but then I wonder why not just delete the original (or old) version so these two near identicals don't exist side-by-side in various catagories. I was after-all the original uploader of the hard copy, using my digital camera. However, I gave it to someone years ago so no longer have same. I think the version currently in the "Paul Martin (illustrator)" article at Wikipedia is best. Not the one you marked "retouched" as too light in upper left area. JimPercy, PawełMM was trying to be helpful (as he always is) by offering you an alternative version to consider. COM:OVERWRITE encourages the creation of separate files for non-trivial alterations, so he created a new image which you could compare. Because you were already obviously trying different revisions to your upload I decided that improving the background was simply a correction to the "faithfulness" of your original photograph, and thus "minor" enough to upload my versions to your original, mostly because it is "your" upload, and that's how you were approaching it yourself. There's an argument that, "by the book", I should have created a derivative myself, but I chose to follow your lead.
Since you prefer the end results in the original file, if you find having the second version around confusing or undesirable, I'm pretty sure Paweł wouldn't mind tagging his unused version for deletion as "user request". -- Begoon 01:44, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

@Begoon: Okay. I guess I'm just lost, since this is "over my head." I was thinking the reason for the "Other versions" tag in the Summary box was due to graphic's work altering the original state or something. (Hence, needed as a type of warning.) Yes, it seems confusing it being there, but I'm just a novice in this area. So thanks again to efforts of both. A most noticeable, positive improvement over before. Hi Pavel, You may have noticed that using the “Fourier filter” to mitigate the Moiré yields poor results. Try using a negative value in the dialog box “Vibrance” instead.

Making images square - enquiry about possibility, no request for work to be done

Request: This is an enquiry rather than a request for anything to be done. The above image is a not a rectangle (which in this case seems to be a printing rather than a scanning artefact (cf. [4]).

Is there a straightforward way to transform the image into a rectangle? In essence it seems to need the top right corner pulling up somewhat. I'm a clueless GIMP user, if it helps. (And then there's a discussion about whether such images should ever be made square. I've come across some which seem to result from non-flat pages being photographed, although I can't put my finger on one as I write ... perhaps what underlies my question is, is this desk able to handle such transformations.) thx --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:05, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Request: Hi fellows! Does anyone know why all the PNGs issued from Photoshop I upload here do not display well on this site? I need to open each file with another software (Paint 3D) to overwrite it with the same extension, to get a visible thumbnail on Commons. I come to this section after having posted a similar request at the Help Hesk a few days ago (now archived) and Phabricator with the help of Jeff G. I've been using Photoshop CS for decades but only since recently Photoshop CC, and do not understand the problem. Maybe some of you know. Request: These cats are the wrong colour. In fact, the American lion was a dark colour, with some white and yellow stripes on the underside, but overall it was a reddish brown rusty colour (rufous). It is not very easy to adjust the colour levels so much as they are so light in colour, artifacts appear or the sharpness of the image dulls. If anyone would like to try...; The details are... wrong colour... red/brown/rusty colour with black spots and some yellow and white stripes on the underside... These cats are noticeably paler than the African lion and the cougar, but they are otherwise very well constructed. @PawełMM: The thing I am trying to achieve here Pawel is not simply a red or orange tint to the lion as it is, but a totally different colour, a brown cat with a reddish tint, with some white and yellow stripes where they appear here, and also the spots, black but intact as they are, simply that the whole cat would be more sort of based on a chocolate colour than a sandy colour. Even putting a slight tint on it I ruin the image totally so if it's not possible, totally understandable. ~ R.T.G 12:00, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Improve collage

To substitute the image that is at beginning of that article insted of the text I woud make a collage of the images like the one bellow. But in the first row at center it is needed to write "Lamentação de Cristo/Deposição da Cruz" framed, like a picture, and in the bottom row there should be a space between the two images, resulting a whole in a U inverted shape:

Comment I don't like to criticise the work people do here especially someone who does so much work but PawełMM your cuts out are rather nasty on these two images. You need to soften the edges or use another way of doing it. Unfortunately I'm not well enough versed in retouching to advise you but I know it is possible. I completely agree with you. But unfortunately, it seems more a question of speed than care. I probably need three times as much time to process. terrible import of Botticelli's Venus used throughout Wikipedia

According to its file usage info, many Wikipedia branches use File:Sandro_Botticelli_-_La_nascita_di_Venere_-_Google_Art_Project_-_edited.jpg. This has a max resolution of 30k x 19k which is a whopping 200 MB. But it is extremly blurry close up, and I estimate that a whole order of magnitude of resolution is completely wasted. This file in turn goes back to File:Sandro_Botticelli_-_La_nascita_di_Venere_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg which shares the same problem, and that refers to "Google Cultural Institute, zoom level maximum" as source - and there, at Google, is an actual sharp and crisp image to be found with incredible detail. Either it was imported in a rather clumsy fashion, or at a point in time when Google did not offer a better resolution. Anyway it would be a nice task to find, or do a better import, and go through the various projects and replace it. -- Theoprakt (talk) 08:29, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

However, there's no real contextual reason an image of an non-Wikipedia notable person (even if they were a friend of the uploader) to be added to an article about the school. Request: Clean up image, please. A bit of background: this long out-of-copyright (author died 1885) drawing is from a very rare book, of which the only online copy (here; go to page 177 of 179 in book) is held by a Russian library which does not allow normal download of images; even printscreening was not available. So the only way I could get a copy for Commons was to take a photo of my computer screen, and upload that. As a result, the quality is very poor, with cross-hatching of the pixels of my monitor. What I'd like is for the cross-hatching to be removed. If anyone has any means of getting the clean image directly from the source document rather than my upload, please do so and upload over my effort (and remember to clone out adjacent birds!). Request: I've done what I can with this pic, but it needs the yellow cast removing. This was very easy in photoshop (go to 'Remove colour cast', and select a point you want to be neutral grey, and it did the rest). But my photoshop is bust, and I can't find out how to do the same in the gimp I'm using now. For the selection point to be grey, please choose a pale part of the stick that the bird is perched on. @PawełMM: Thank you for doing these jobs for me. I am a bit concerned about the DJVU file itself because it appears the DJVU file is worse quality than the PDF, at least on my end it looks that way. And I had the same problem when I tried to convert my local DJVU file to PDF and upload it to Commons first. When I used a website, I believe PDF2DJVU or something like that, to do the conversion, a very similar result seemed to come in the view of the DJVU images on Commons. Crop 400+ digitized images of historical "fine silver" coins

I hope this request is within the scope of the Graphic Lab/Photography workshop:

In c:Category:Digitization of Feinsilber coin images of Eberhard Auer there are 400+ images of historical silver coins, photographed many years ago as analog b/w slides using double exposure against a dark background, recently donated by the numismatist/photographer, digitized by a commercial service, then uploaded by myself.

de:Feinsilber (to be extended), various articles in :de: and other WPs as well as numerous specific categories on the coins of the respective issuing rulers, mostly underneath c:Category:Coins of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg.

Request: Separate obverse and reverse of each coin, crop irrelevant background up to a small margin, sometimes slightly rotate to an upright position as necessary and ideally (though not necessarily) remove the dark background, similar to e.g. c:Category:Fotosession im Lokal K (Münzen und Medaillen).

Given the relevance and completeness of this image collection in its particular numismatic field, i.e. "fine silver" (non-alloy) coins of the 17th-19th centuries in northern Germany, such image processing is no doubt worthwhile to complement the textual effort of individually annotating and categorizing, currently done by myself (still largely outcommented); but I am not in a position to realistically do the imaging part myself, as a trial on one sample image has shown.

Request: I took these photos back in 2013 with a phone's camera. As you can see some reflects my image or the images of other items. Can these reflections be removed, as much as possible?
