In 2016, Leiden University Library and KITLV/Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies donated 3132 high resolution mainly nineteenth and early twentieth century photographs and works of art to Wikimedia Commons in a partnership with Wikimedia. This donation is an extension of their 2015 donation of 2418 colonial photographs, mainly of Indonesia and India. The 2810 photographs show Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China, and Suriname. The 322 works of art depict people, landscapes, plantations, plants and butterflies of Suriname and landscapes of Indonesia.

Leiden University Library, which presently manages the source image database media-kitlv.nl, has made this donation possible in practice. The uploads were performed by Hansmuller/Hans Muller using the GLAMwiki Toolset software. English translations and corrections of the captions and other metadata were added.
