100 000 Bildminnen is a collaborative project by Wikimedia Sverige and the Nordic Museum in Stockholm where previously unpublished archival photographs are digitized and made available on Wikimedia Commons.

The project started with a smaller pilot upload in the summer of 2022 and the actual digitization and upload commenced in September 2022.

The photos provided by the museum are often accompanied by minimal metadata, which is why one of the goals of the project is to encourage the Wikimedia community to improve it. Afterwards, the enriched information (such as categories, motif descriptions etc.) will be fed back into the museum's systems.

Everyone can help out by adding depicts statements to the photos. Here's how they work. That way, it will be easier for everyone to find relevant photographs.

We have prepared a couple campaigns in the ISA Tool where you can start adding depicts statements:

  1. Agricultural university in Ultuna
  2. Stockholm
  3. Photos by Karl W. Gullers

About the digitization project[edit]

Final report for the project (in Swedish).

The project has been running since September 2022. Nordiska museet is working together with Wikimedia Sverige and KulturIT to digitize many thousands of archival photographs and make them available to the general public using, among others, the Wikimedia platforms.

The project has roots in an unfortunate accident. In january 2021, there was a water leak at the storage facilities at the museum. Many archival photographs were damaged. This made it clear how important it is to digitize invaluable material that could be lost without ever being seen by the general public and researchers. That's how the project 100 000 Bildminnen was born, in order to preserve the photographs taken by several of Sweden's most prominent photographers, such as Gösta Glase (Q51671233), Sten Didrik Bellander (Q5569413) and K.W. Gullers (Q5776363).
