Commons:PD files/reviewers

A user that is not an admin or a flickr reviewer can request permission from the community to review images tagged as public domain (PD) on the talk page on this subpage. For more information see Commons:PD files. If permissions are granted you can add {{PD reviewer}} (or one of its variants) to your user page and begin reviewing images. Reviewers will verify that an image is in fact PD.

Instructions for reviewers[edit]

  1. Detailed instructions can be found on Commons:PD files.
  2. Images needing your help are in Category:PD files for review.
  3. Consider whether the file is truly PD. Many users have no clue about copyrights, and "freely" license images for which they do not own the copyright! A verified OTRS ticket granting PD status is an excellent indicator of PD status.
  4. If the uploader was or may not be the author, check to ensure the PD status of the file
  5. Remove the Category:PD files for review category
  6. If the source is a web site, ensure the link is still active
  7. Tag it with: {{PDreview|~~~|2024-03-19}} or {{subst:PDr}} for automated signature and date, the template will add it to the Category:PD reviewed files category

Instructions on how to become a reviewer[edit]

To become a reviewer one needs to be familiar with the general licensing policy of Commons. A reviewer is required to know be familiar with PD status—this is true for both admins and non-admins. If you are neither an admin nor a flickr reviewer, post your request on the talk page, so that the community can voice their opinions. After seven days, a reviewer or administrator determines whether there are no severe objections to the candidate. If there are none, the user will close the request and add the candidate to the list of reviewers below. If you are an admin, since passing an RFA shows the community has trust in you, you may add yourself to this list if you are familiar with PD policy.
