Background
[edit]Structured data on Commons uses Federated Wikibase to organize information. Federated Wikibase serves the general structure for the data, and Wikidata is the host for the organization of information. Thus, structured Commons will be using properties from Wikidata, pulling them to display on Commons and organize the media information. A property is paired with a value to make a statement, such as "the color is blue." In that statement, "color" is the property, and "blue" is the value. Examples of properties are depicts, author, copyright and licensing information, related works, volunteer quality assessments, etc.
Getting started
[edit]In the near future the first example prototypes using a property, Depicts, will be available for discussion and use. After that, the SDC team will begin building out the software for the community to start applying other properties to images. In order to do this, there needs to be a list of what properties Commons sees being used for structured data. Some of these properties already exist, and some will need to be created. To begin, I suggest we use some examples of what we might expect to see as data about a particular file. Let’s walk through some.
