WIKI LOVES AFRICA 2020

MAIN THEME HOW TO + RULES LOCAL EVENTS

How to ...

1. Take photos!

This is the fun part! You can enter media (photos, video clips or audio files) that covers the theme of people, vehicles, animals and infrastructure that help to move people, goods, animals and things across Africa. Think rare and unusual ways of looking at those items we might take for granted around us.

2. Select the best!

Your media could go onto Wikipedia to illustrate an article. Choose photos and media where the subject matter is clear and in focus.

3. Register on Commons

You have to be registered on Wikimedia Commons to enter the competition. Make sure your email is enabled so that we can contact you if you are a winner!

4. Read the rules

Read the rules listed below. It is really important that you follow the rules, otherwise your effort will be wasted.

5. Enter your photos!

Enter your photographs using this link to go directly to the upload page. Remember to describe the photo and add relevant categories to the image.

6. What now ?

Now you are registered on Wikipedia, the fun doesn’t stop here!! There are many things you can do:
  1. Take more amazing photos and enter them!
  2. Add your photo to the relevant article on Wikipedia in your language.
  3. If you see that a subject that you are passionate about is not yet on Wikipedia, then you might want to consider writing an article about that subject
  4. Share the fun with others. Invite them to join http://bit.ly/EnterWLA2020

Competition rules

There are a few rules to respect for the images to be eligible.

  • Rule 1: All photos must be taken by the person submitting them. They can be uploaded by you or uploaded during a registered mass upload session. Your image must have your name or nom de plume on the uploaded file.
  • Rule 2: Entries will only be accepted if uploaded between the 15th February to 15th April 2020. You can enter media that was taken at any time, even historical photographs (as long as you own the copyright on these photographs or they are in the public domain), but they must be uploaded during those dates.
  • Rule 3: Images with watermarks or embedded signatures will not be eligible. All entries submitted to the contest will automatically be licenced under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 (CC-BY-SA 4.0) (or those in the public domain). Read more about the cc-by-sa license here.
  • Rule 4: All eligible pictures will be categorised under Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020, this will be automatically assigned during the upload process. (Feel free to add other relevant categories and descriptions to make the images more usable on the projects.)
  • Rule 5: Participants must registered on WIkimedia Commons and be contactable. Please enable e-mail on Wikimedia Commons so we can contact you should your image be chosen for a prize.
  • Rule 6: To be considered for the video prize, the file must be uploaded in the video format (.ogg, .ogv, or .webm) that is required for Wikimedia Commons. Please note audio and visual quality and storytelling will be taken into account for your file to be eligible for a prize.

ENTER YOUR IMAGES HERE.

Please note: There are events happening in the major cities of countries across Africa.  Please watch the social media channels for news about what is happening near you!

Ineligibility

  • Photographs that are already on Commons (this means re-uploading is not allowed).
  • As the images will be hosted on Wikimedia Commons, all entries must fall within Commons scope. Any that do not will be disqualified and may be deleted without notice.
  • Images with watermarks, timestamps or image credits on the picture itself or any other kind of editing which associates the image with the uploader are not eligible.

Notes on video

Other files, such as audio and video, are welcome. For videos, please submit files in the following formats:

  • .ogg
  • .ogv
  • .webm

Due to complex intellectual property rights issues, Wikimedia Commons can not accept video content that is submitted in any other format. It is recommended by the Wiki Loves Africa team that you used an off-Wiki conversion tool, such as Handbrake to convert your file to either a .webm format, before uploading the video using the Upload Wizard. It is suggested that you upload video content one video at a time.

For more information, there is a helpful 'how to' guide on how to convert video media into these formats can be found here on Wikimedia. Please note: IF you use one of the Wikimedia-based conversion tools, such as Video2commons, then a separate upload process (separate from the upload wizard) is used. If this is the case, you should include these two categories when you enter the file details during the process. They two categories are Videos from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 and Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2020 in [your country] otherwise we won't know that you have uploaded them and they cannot be used as upload information!

Judging criteria

The judging will be done by a panel of international Wikipedians, professional photographers and subject specialists, based of thumb rules of photography and as well as the community standards.

  • A good photo has a good story to tell.
  • A good photo removes all unnecessary distractions from the chief element, so that the latter is not out of the focus.
  • Potential usefulness and overall value of the image (including its licensing) to the Wikimedia projects.
  • Technical quality – Image parameters such as focus, lighting, saturation, ISO etc. will be taken into consideration.

The jury will judge individual entries based on the following criteria:

  • Technical quality
  • Originality
  • Potential usefulness and overall value of the image (including its licensing) to the Wikimedia projects.
