Why participate?

This is a unique opportunity to document, value, and protect Peru's amazing biodiversity while contributing to global open knowledge. Your photos will be featured in Wikipedia articles (the most consulted encyclopedia on the planet), showcasing the richness of our ecosystems to millions of people: from the mangroves of Tumbes to the snow-capped Andes. Plus, all images are hosted on Wikimedia Commons, an open database used by schools, scientists, and international media. You'll be part of a digital legacy for future generations!

By documenting natural areas, you're helping monitor environmental change (by comparing old and new photos). You're raising awareness about endangered species or fragile ecosystems. You don't need to be a professional; you can upload photos from your personal archive. You could also win international awards and visibility for your work (your credits will appear with every use of your photos). It's easy and free! If you don't have one yet, create an account. More information about the international contest is available at https://wikilovesearth.org.

If you'd like to participate in promoting the contest, we have a space with press releases and other communication materials.

The Jury

Our jury will process the images in two or three rounds. At the end of this process, the jury selects the top 15. If there is any doubt about the application of the rules, the jury decides. Our jury will be composed of individuals with expertise in art, photography, history, and historic preservation. Their decision is final.

Judging criteria

The jury will determine the winners of the international competition based on the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective, etc.)
  • Originality
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.

NOTE: Images that reach the top of the international finals generally meet the technical criteria of the "Featured Image" process on Wikimedia Commons.
