- About the contest
Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photographic competition to promote historic sites around the World through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). Everybody can participate.
The aim of Wiki Loves Monuments photography competition is to highlight and promote the cultural heritage sites of the participating countries with the goal to encourage people to capture pictures of historically and culturally significant sites, and to put them under a free license as opposed to traditional copyright which can then be re-used not only on Wikipedia but everywhere by everyone freely. To achieve that, Wiki Loves Monuments is annually taking place every September since 2010.
Cultural heritage is an important part of the knowledge Wikipedia collects and disseminates. Everybody can contribute images as well as write articles. An image is worth a thousand words, in every language at once and local enthusiasts can (re)discover the cultural, historical, or scientific significance of their neighborhood.
The contest is inspired by the successful 2010 pilot in the Netherlands, which resulted in 12,500 freely licensed images of monuments that can now be used in Wikipedia and by anybody for any purpose. The 2012 contest in 35 countries resulted in more than 350,000 images submitted by over 15,000 participants, adding to the sum of all human knowledge gathered on Wikipedia.

- Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia
Images that reach a top ranking of the international finale, will typically at least fulfill the technical criteria of the ‘Featured Image’ process at Wikimedia Commons. But feel free to submit many images, and let the jury be concerned if they are good enough.
- Jury process
In October, the contest jury will begin evaluating the photographs and award prizes for the best photos in Malaysia as well as around the world.
