Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in Sweden

Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photographic competition to promote historic sites around the World through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). Everybody can participate. By submitting your photos to the competition, you share and help preserve the cultural heritage of Sweden for all fellow Swedes and the rest of the world, to enjoy through the internet.

In September, you may upload as many pictures as you want of cultural sites that you have visited. Pictures don't have to be taken in September, but must be uploaded during that month to be considered. Provide your photo with {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2020|SE}} template. At the end of the month, the contest jury will begin evaluating the photographs and will choose the best 10 pictures of the natural sites in Sweden, and ultimately in the world.

Why participate?

Wiki Loves Monuments is the largest photography competition in the world, with great prizes for the winners. What's more important – however – is that you, through taking part, help documenting and preserving the world's cultural heritage. The competition in Sweden is part of the international annual photographic competition Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM).

What's more – participating is fun! Photographing and sharing images of the cultural heritage is a great way of exploring the local cultural heritage, and learn more about it. It's a challenge to improve your own photography skills, and you stand a chance to win both national and international prizes. The national jury selects 10 images that will represent Sweden in the international finale. More information about the international competition is available on

You can also upload images that you may have taken already during one of your travels to the national competition of that country. Check if your travel destination participates in Wiki Loves Monuments this year.

The Jury

In May, you may upload pictures (old or new) as you want from the given monuments list that you have visited. At the end of the month, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures of the natural monuments in Sweden to submit to represent in the international finale. If there are any doubts about the implementation of the rules, the jury decides.

Eligible objects

The competition name refers to monuments, but in the Swedish context this is to be interpreted as anything from four types of heritage sites: protected buildings, ancient remains, protected ships and working life museums. Each of these sites are given unique identification numbers by official authorities and any official site is eligible. The lists below may not be fully up to date.

Submit the identification number in the competition upload tool for automatic labelling. When uploading in other ways, use one of the templates below.

Template {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2019|SE}} is automatically added to the description when using the tool. If you upload in other ways, make sure to add this yourself.

Judging criteria

The jury will determine the winners of the international contest taking into the consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
  • Originality;
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.

Images that reach a top ranking of the international finale, will typically at least fulfill the technical criteria of the ‘Featured Image’ process at Wikimedia Commons. But feel free to submit images, and let the jury be concerned if they are good enough.
