On 12 June 2026, the Dhaka Wikimedia Community is hosting a full-day Wikimedia Commons Edit-a-thon at the Wikimedia Bangladesh Office, Dhaka (09:00–17:00 BST). This is not a conference or workshop — Wikimedians will gather together and collaboratively work on categorizing files on Wikimedia Commons. Editing progress will be automatically tracked via the Outreach Dashboard.

About

File categorization is one of the most impactful contributions to Wikimedia Commons — it makes files discoverable, reusable, and available to millions of readers across Wikimedia projects. Poorly categorized or uncategorized files are difficult to find and are often underutilized. This edit-a-thon brings Bangladeshi Wikimedians together in person to improve this situation systematically.

The primary focus of this edit-a-thon is to clear the categorization backlog of the images from Press Information Department of Bangladesh. Participants will systematically sort images from the backlog tracking category: Category:Press Information Department images without category.

Scope of work:

Adding missing categories to uncategorized or undercategorized files
Correcting incorrect or over-broad categories
Linking files to relevant WikiProjects and thematic categories
Ensuring files related to Bangladesh, Bengali culture, and related topics are properly organized

Preparation

Before the event, participants must:

Create a Wikimedia Commons account if you do not already have one.
Enroll in the Outreach Dashboard → Click here to enroll. This ensures your contributions are tracked.
Add your name to the Participants section below.
Bring your own device — a laptop with charger is strongly recommended. Mobile phones are also acceptable if they have internet connectivity.
