Localization of Montage[edit]

Hi, Would it be possible to have Montage added to to have the interface available in other languages? There has been a task asking for that since 2017, but no reaction from anyone so far. Thanks in advance. /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 10:55, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Photo challenge[edit]

Is it possible to use this tool to vote for the monthly photo challenge?
If so, how can this be used.
--F. RiedelioDiskussion 10:45, 17 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I forwarded your question to the developers, but maybe you want to send them an email if the question is still relevant. Ciell (talk) 16:50, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your support. The request is still relevant. Unfortunately, I don't know the developer's e-mail address, but because you've already forwarded the problem, this is done for me. A solution of the problem would be a significant relief and improvement not only for me but also for the many contributors and especially for the voters of the monthly photo challenge.
-- F. RiedelioDiskussion 14:16, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @F. Riedelio: , I'm going to send out a reminder. With "the monthly photo challenge", you mean one of the Commons photo challenges I presume? Could you please provide a link to which one the request is about? The tool works with pre-assigned jury-members, so randomly passing by users of Commons would not be able to vote. But if you have a small set of jurors, I imagine this could be possible with Montage. Ciell (talk) 14:53, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@F. Riedelio: I'm one of the Montage developers, along with User:MahmoudHashemi. Thanks for your question! Could you help me understand how the monthly photo challenge works? Is there a category or group of eligible images that people vote on? The way Montage works currently, each voting round starts with a set of eligible photos (e.g., from the category for a wiki loves campaign) and a set number of jurors (as Ciell mentioned). I can't make any feature promises at the moment since we have a development backlog, but I'd love to understand what you need to see if it's possible! Slaporte (talk) 16:38, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Ciell: and @Slaporte: ,
By "the monthly photo challenge" I mean the ‘Monthly photo challenge’ on the main page of Wikimedia Commons.
The aim and purpose of this competition is to encourage those interested to take pictures in order to enrich Wikimedia Commons with photos. Sometimes more than 300 photos are submitted each month per theme. The challenge has 2 themes per month. These are proposed and voted by the users. Each participant can upload up to 4 photos per topic in the submission phase. Voting will take place next month and the results will be announced in the month after next.
It is not a fixed group of jurors, as the voting is open to all registered contributors who have held accounts for at least 10 days and made 50 changes, as well as new Commons contributors who have taken up the challenge with a picture.
The vote will take place as follows:
Up to three photos can be selected by the contributors in each theme to award points for the personal 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. In addition, any number of photos can be highly praised (0 points). Sometimes you have to look at over 300 photos, rate them and assign points to vote. To assign points, the selected contribution must be edited by inserting an entry, e.g. * {{3/3 *}} - ~~~~ for the favorites.
For a large number of photos, this voting method is not user-friendly and very time-consuming. It makes voting much more difficult. Therefore, IMHO users do not participate in the competition, which means that Wikipedia misses many photos.
I have already submitted the problem here, unfortunately so far without success.

Wiki Loves Heritage Belgium 2021[edit]

Could you please create a Montage campaign for Wiki Loves Heritage Belgium 2021 that ran from 1 July 2021 till 31 October 23:59 in Category:Images from Wiki Loves Heritage Belgium in 2021. I (Geertivp) will be the coordinator. Thanks. Geert Van Pamel (talk) 00:35, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Geertivp, here is your campaign: 464-wiki-loves-heritage-belgium-2021! Ciell (talk) 20:18, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves NYC Parks - Prospect Park 2021[edit]

Wikimedia NYC's nature photography contest ended on 10/31 and we are currently screening images for problems. I'm hoping to start the judging process next week. I've used Montage several times as a judge, but this will be my first time as an organizer (so thank you for your patience).

Dates: September 18, 2021 04:00 UTC - November 1, 2021 04:00 UTC

Main campaign page is Campaign:ProspectPark, but we will primarily use Category:Wiki Loves NYC Parks - Prospect Park 2021 - eligible for judging purposes. Note that this category is not yet complete (we are still moving files into this category as they are considered eligible).

Landing/event page is en:WP:PROSPECTPARK2021.

I will be the organizer/coordinator.

Thanks! — Rhododendrites talk |  15:00, 7 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rhododendrites, here is your campaign: 471-wiki-loves-nyc-parks-prospect-park-2021. The images will not get pulled into Montage until you activate the first round: until then you have the opportunity to add or remove images from the category you will be using for the jury process. You'll notice I have set the end date for the contest on 'today', nov 10th: this is because when a file is altered after the date we give here (cropping, light balance, etc), Montage will consider them to be not eligible. So when setting up the rounds, always consider prolonging this date, see Commons:Montage#Step_1._Check_your_campaign_settings.
Happy judging! Ciell (talk) 10:24, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Thanks. What counts as being "altered" in this context? Just new uploads? What about renaming? There is still some screening to do, and more ambiguous filenames to rename. Should that now wait until the end? — Rhododendrites talk |  13:12, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Meant in this context are edits of the photo, so for instance new versions of already existing images. General maintenance of the file pages should not be of influence of images being imported to Montage, but just to be sure always take the 'day of today' when activating the first round. Also, is it possible to set up "Libya" campaigns before November 16 ? as we need to make a demo video for the jury members before they start their work.
Thank you very much!
Nassima Chahboun (talk) 11:13, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nassima Chahboun, I created a 'demo' campaign for you for this: 477-whindanger-2021-demo-campaign, and propose you for instance use Category:Whindanger 2021 Ghadames (52 images now) or Category:Whindanger 2021 Leptis Magna (93 images now). They have enough images to show the three different sort of rounds, but not as much to consume a lot of time for you. I would also very much appreciate if you could upload and share your jury instruction on Commons, for other future campaign coordinators and jurors in the Montage tool! I have been lacking time to create such a demo before. Meanwhile, I'll make sure your campaigns are ready to go after the 16th. Thanks! Ciell (talk) 13:18, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi NANöR, Nassima Chahboun, Nehaoua: your campaigns are ready, I linked them in your table above. You can start preparing the first rounds, but please do not activate it before the competitions have ended (activating the first round is the moment when all images get pulled into Montage - setting rounds up before is okay though!). Happy judging, great to see a photo initiative like this: imho they are extra special, because "There is a deadline." Dobar.svg Ciell (talk) 20:25, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ciell , thank you!

Here is the demo video for jurors, and I will upload another one for coordinators soon.

Regarding the campaigns, we would like to have a campaign for each category, because each site will be evaluated seperately (3 campaigns instead of one for Afghanistan for instance). Thank you! Nassima Chahboun (talk) 20:13, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Love the video!! Very well done, so easy!
Let me create the 14 campaigns for you tomorrow, I'll ping you again when they are ready. Ciell (talk) 21:40, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nassima Chahboun ✓ Done
I am not sure how Montage will handle the categories with just a few images, less then 50, I'd love to hear back from you on this!
As an alternative, you may for instance want to create a gallery page with the images in the smaller categories, and ask your jurors to just send you their top 10 by email.
Happy judging! Ciell (talk) 08:37, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is there more documentation anywhere?[edit]

The documentation leaves some questions which I cannot find answers to. Like for yes/no it only asks for a quorum number.

  1. Does that mean [two] votes each and the organizer determines what to do with the results?
  2. Will it automatically divide the images to ensure each image is voted on by two people?
  3. What do the results look like for the different kinds of voting? Just a straightforward csv with like filename, juror name, and yes/no/rating?
  4. Is the expectation that that csv (or whatever) will be manipulated and then serve as a file list for the next round? Is there a WMF-hosted site to upload it? Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk |  16:42, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Rhododendrites I have only been a campaign creator since last year, and I have not came accross more documentation. The devs are my fall back, as I am yours now, so let me see how far I get!
  1. Montage will let you set the threshold for the next round: if you as a coordinator can select if one vote out of two is enough to go to the second (rating) round, or if both (or 'all') jurors will have to agree = threshold.
  2. Yes, all 'tasks' (nmbr of images x number in quorum) will be spread out over all jurors. They will not have to, and can't, judge the same image twice.
  3. Nope, once in the campaign the first round is activated, all the images that are needed are pulled into Montage, and you can create several rounds from the previous ones automatically.
Montage enables you to set up a ranking round for the jurors once you've got less than 51 images left. That ranking round will come out as a cvs (though I've seen that Excel 2019 struggles with it, you may want to use Libre office, google spreadsheet - or use a different open tool to convert the file so you can use excel. Let me know if you want me to download and convert the results for you.
  1. ...? Maybe the previous answer answered this one as well...?
Best, Ciell (talk) 20:16, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
1 - Example text - Is this selected afterwards? I don't see an option for this.
3 - I'm still not clear about this. It would help if there were documentation about the kinds of options available to coordinators after the round. I presume there's a lot more that's presently hidden from me. I guess I'll just move forward with the first round and see what happens?
Thanks — Rhododendrites talk |  20:53, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rhododendrites if you create a small sample size category (with ~20 images), I can set up a simulated campaign for you so you can try the process.
1 - when setting up a second or third round, you a the coordinator can decide the threshold of images that will go to this next round.
3 - there are three options: yes/no is always the first round, then you will create as many rating rounds as needed to get to the final 50 images or less, and you always end with a ranking round. Ciell (talk) 10:05, 14 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Montage for the Śląsk Cieszyński Campaign[edit]

We would like to ask for Montage for WMPL Śląsk Cieszyński photo campaign.

  • Contest category
  • jury coordinator Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska
  • upload dates: 16.09.2021 -

Thank you! Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska (WMPL) (talk) 14:06, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska (WMPL), I assumed you mean 14-11-2021 ;-), and here is your campaign: Happy judging! Ciell (talk) 20:29, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Montage for the Wiki Loves România[edit]

We would like to ask for Montage for Wiki Loves România contest.

Thank you!--Strainu (talk) 11:59, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Strainu, here is your campaign: 497-wiki-loves-rom%C3%A2nia. You can set up the first round before the competition ends, but please do not activate the round before the competition ended and the jury is ready. :) Happy judging! Ciell (talk) 16:24, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Technical problems with ranking view[edit]

Hi, i have one jury member who has ranked twice the photos in ranking view but failed somehow to save the results. User think that she least tried to save the results and she is technically able person so there is clearly something which needs attention. Either in user interface or actual bug. I will try to check the problem via screen sharing. In case of actual bug I would like to know if there is possibility check from logs what jury member voted in case where result has not been saved so this would not be a blocker? --Zache (talk) 09:49, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zache,
I don't think we can see this in the logs if the juror could not save the results. Could you please ask her to watch this video to make sure she followed all of the steps for the juror ranking (ranking is shown from 1:12 onwards)? Ciell (talk) 11:03, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Also just to confirm, is it possible to save a round AND then continue later? (in video there were "edit votes") Zache (talk) 11:00, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that should be possible. Ciell (talk) 19:47, 20 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Falles 2021[edit]

Thanks.--TaronjaSatsuma (talk) 13:05, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TaronjaSatsuma, here is your campaign: 498-wiki-loves-falles-2021. Happy judging! Ciell (talk) 17:39, 20 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: . It gave us some problems. Can we start a new campaign?--TaronjaSatsuma (talk) 20:58, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi TaronjaSatsuma,
Sure, that's possible. Am I correct in seeing 3 out of 5 jury members did not engage? Or could you share a bit more on the problems you encountered? Ciell (talk) 21:32, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It was a mess since the very beggining...--TaronjaSatsuma (talk) 21:45, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oei, that sounds bad, sorry to hear that.... Just to be clear here: was it the Montage tool causing the problems, or did you encounter problems on the organizational side of things? Ciell (talk) 21:58, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps it was my fault, but I believe it was Montage misfunctioning. Can we have a new campaign? thx!--TaronjaSatsuma (talk) 14:32, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if you think Montage was behaving badly, it would be useful for me to know what the problem was? So I can either prevent from it happening again, or take this to our developers as a bug, so all people using Montage can benefit from it. Ciell (talk) 18:08, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question: custom set for the final round?[edit]

In the ongoing Wiki Loves NYC Parks - Prospect Park Nature Photography Contest, We've had a couple rounds of voting, then had a meeting to determine the finalists. I'd now like to take a subset of images to a final ranking round. I'm pretty sure I've seen that happen in other competitions, but I can't see how it's done. To be clear, this subset doesn't correspond to a specific rating/ranking/average score but rather based on off-wiki discussion. Can I load in a csv of files or something? Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk |  03:22, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rhododendrites, in a new campaign it will be possible to pull in the images to Montage through a cvs list - this does not work in a already active campaign. If you want to do a ranking round, remember that the ranking round is limited to 50 images.
If you want me to create a new campaign for your final round, just ping me. Ciell (talk) 10:05, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Yes please. Thanks. :) — Rhododendrites talk |  13:32, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Rhododendrites: here is your new campaign: 505-wiki-loves-nyc-parks-prospect-park-nature-finalists. Ciell (talk) 18:56, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Science Competition 2021 in North Macedonia[edit]

Hello, we wanted to use once again Montage tool for our photographic competition Wiki Science Competition 2021 in North Macedonia. Category name of the uploaded image on Commons is Category:Images from Wiki Science Competition 2021 in North Macedonia. You can set my username as coordinator (Ehrlich91). If you need anything else, please contact me. Thank you a lot --Ehrlich91 (talk) 13:32, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ciell I would appreciate if you see this request before holidays :) --Ehrlich91 (talk) 18:20, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ehrlich91, sorry, I have been offline a bit. Can you gives me the dates of the upload period for the competition? Ciell (talk) 21:19, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ciell, not a problem. The contest started on 1st of November, and ended on 15th of December. --Ehrlich91 (talk) 13:35, 25 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Montage vote button unavailable[edit]

When clicking on "MONTAGE" we get the following options:

Active Voting Rounds
Vote on currently open rounds.

but there is no link available on "Vote on currently open rounds." (not clickable). What is wrong? Is there a problem with the system? Is there a problem with campaign Geert Van Pamel (talk) 16:38, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unarchived the campaign for you: this campaign was requested 2,5 months ago, therefore I assumed it was not needed. Problems should be solved now. Ciell (talk) 19:16, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, indeed, I did not notice the "Unarchive Campaign" button at the top of the screen... Geert Van Pamel (talk) 19:50, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Request to collage[edit]

Can you collage into montage the following image:

Caption = From top, left to right: Destroyed tank in Edaga Hamus of Tigray Region, funeral service of Mai Kadra massacre at Abu Aregawi church, Mekelle offensive in 2020, Demolished medical properties inside Wikru Hospital in Tigray Region, and injured civilian under critical condition inflicted by gunshot. Thanks! The Supermind (talk) 10:18, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @The Supermind. I'm not sure, but I think you have misunderstood what this page is about. This talk page is for the jury tool Montage, not for requesting creation of montages of images. I'm not sure if there is a page for that, but asking at Commons:Help desk might give you some help. /Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 15:05, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
