Who are running the contest?[edit]

Why "Who are running the contest?" section is not translatable? Okras (talk) 08:52, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The page wasn't in category:POTY 2014, maybe nobody needed this a year ago (now added). I tested the <translate> magic, please fix/revert/enable this. –Be..anyone (talk) 10:50, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You can now translate the first 12 strings, ignoring some "availability" details. –Be..anyone (talk) 18:29, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks. But what about "Have a look at the Committee page, here." sentence and its section title and "Help" page itself? Okras (talk) 21:16, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Needs again a TA, but should be easy; for unknown reasons text between T:33 and T:38 wasn't tagged for translation. –Be..anyone (talk) 22:14, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Be..anyone: Please do not add translation markers manually! Just use <translate> tags. Translation markers (these are the funny HTML comments with the numbers in them) are automatically added by the translate extension when the page is marked for translation! .. be rillke 19:52, 17 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Miscategorised image[edit]

File:Viborg Power Plant 2014-11-17-1.jpg is currently in "Religious buildings" even though it is a power plant and so should be in the miscellaneous buildings category. /Lokal_Profil 16:21, 21 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hahaha, good one (my pic). Well if you are a physicist (as I) you often believe in things like the "conservation of energy". An energy temple!. Anyways nice job setting it all up. You people have done an  Awesome! job here. It looks very professional, and it works like a charm (I just voted on round one). A big high five and kudos to the team running POTY 2014! Thanks. Thanks. Thanks. -- Slaunger (talk) 22:39, 22 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks. And I definitly agree with Slaunger (on both points). /Lokal_Profil 15:50, 23 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Info button???[edit]

Point No. 4 in the section "How can I vote manually?" says: Click on the Info button below and to the right of the image you want to vote for. However, there is no info button below and to the right of the images in the individual categories. Jan Kameníček (talk) 14:18, 24 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jan.Kamenicek: Sorry it took me much longer and it was much easier to fix than I expected. Info buttons should be there now. -- Rillke(q?) 11:29, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Fitzcarmalan[edit]

Not sure which venue is more appropriate to ask this question, but is there a reason why different versions of the same photo are repeated twice here?

Fitzcarmalan (talk) 13:36, 25 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Fitzcarmalan: These are two individual pictures, which were both voted to become Featured Pictures in 2014. All pictures which were featured in 2014 are elligible for 2014 POTY. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 14:56, 25 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Gérald Garitan[edit]

Bonjour, y-a-t-il des photos faite par des personnes mortes où prises et publiées il y a des années (100 ans ou plus)? Ces photos peuvent-elles être la photographie de l'année 2014 ? Merci A+

Gérald Garitan (talk) 14:01, 25 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Gérald Garitan: Il y a File:Louis-Emile Durandelle, The Eiffel Tower - State of the Construction, 1888.jpg, prise en 1888 et c'est possible que cette photo sera l'image de l'année 2014. -- Rillke(q?) 11:06, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Statistics[edit]

The FAQ section talks about statistics updated twice a day. Where can it be found? Thanks. Jan Kameníček (talk) 14:58, 25 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jan.Kamenicek:
@Jan.Kamenicek: Created them at Commons:Picture of the Year/2014/R1/Stats. Sorry for the delay. -- Rillke(q?) 18:17, 27 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Llywelyn2000[edit]

We have a POTY banner on cywiki (Welsh Wikipedia) which needs translating. Can someone link me to it please so that I can translate the text ASAP! Otherwise the community will go beserk (actually, they are!) Please also give a few days warning in future as happens on Translatewiki. Thanks. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 16:14, 25 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I see someone has translate the banner; but it has spelling mistakes. It should read 'a bwrw'ch pleidlais dros' rather than 'a bwrwch bledilais dros'. I still would like a link to the translation tool, as it's not the usua procedure, and how permission for this banner was granted on cywiki. Many thanks Llywelyn2000 (talk) 16:52, 26 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Be..anyone[edit]

Either File:2013-POTY-R1-stats-has-to-be-uploaded.png has to be moved to File:2014-POTY-R1-stats-has-to-be-uploaded.png, or the stats link should be 2013 also for 2014, or I miss a clue. Be..anyone (talk) 02:34, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Be..anyone: Someone wíth POTY JS enabled has to take a screenshot of the statistics and upload them under the 2014 file. If you have enabled the POTY gadget, it will create the statics from a JSON data file. -- Rillke(q?) 10:54, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Veikk0.ma[edit]

I can't find this picture listed in the November category or in any of the other voting categories. Is it actually missing or am I just blind? -- Veikk0.ma (talk) 08:15, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Veikk0.ma: It's listed at Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2014/R1/Gallery/Constructions_and_buildings; cf. Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2014/Candidates#Constructions_and_buildings 2014-02/87. -- Rillke(q?) 10:51, 28 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Queen1909[edit]

Je n'arrive pas à voter,pourquoi?

Queen1909 (talk) 16:12, 30 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Queen1909: You are not elligible to vote, because you did not have more than 75 edits on any Wiki before 1 January 2015. — Vous n'êtes pas admissible à recevoir de voter, parce que vous ne avez pas plus de 75 modifications sur tout Wiki avant le 1er Janvier 2015. Categorisation[edit]

Sculptures are under "Objects, rocks and miscellaneous"... seriously? Why on earth not "Artworks"? Ham II (talk) 18:10, 31 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Also, I'm sure I drew attention to this at POTY 2013, but not all 2-dimensional artworks are paintings. Very disappointed to see posters and prints in the "Paintings" category this year. Please don't be this sloppy in POTY 2015! Ham II (talk) 18:32, 31 January 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ham II: The dates POTY preparation takes place is not a mystery and there was a call for comment on categorization which unfortunately very few user made use of. You are invited to help with categorization next year; I sorted about 300 files in 1 hour, and I couldn't simply spend more time. I understand categorization was not optimal and it has to be improved next year and invite you to join POTY's committee next December, or watch the contest from that time on so you can fix the points you see. Will you help us next year? -- Rillke(q?) 17:12, 3 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rillke: I would be more than happy to help next year, and I apologise for not seeing any call for comment on categorisation (nor indeed could I find the page on which I complained at POTY 2013 when I last looked). Although it was let down by the categorisation, which meant that I only noticed the sculptures on the last day of Round 1 of voting, from a design point of view the presentation of POTY this year has been excellent. Ham II (talk) 17:57, 3 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Call was on COM:VP and our categorization page is under /Candidates. Glad that you're going to help us. Please don't miss to add yourself to the committee page (I suggest that you're going to create the page right now so we're not going to forget you). -- Rillke(q?) 20:50, 3 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rillke: Sorry for the delay, but I've added my signature to the page. Ham II (talk) 14:58, 10 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from GoginkLobabi[edit]

When will the second round begin ? It was planned for yesterday...

Random picture order in R2[edit]

Random picture order on R2 voting page does not work for me. I tried even multiple browsers (FF 35 + IE 11), and the order of pictures is remaining the same (starting with File:Sant Vasily cathedral in Moscow.JPG and File:Fat Albert low level pass.jpg). --Jklamo (talk) 13:10, 16 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jklamo: And for me it's always File:European Parliament Strasbourg Hemicycle - Diliff.jpg as the first and ending with File:Dülmen, Umland, Sonnenaufgang -- 2012 -- 9.jpg
Glad you noticed we use seeded (pseudo)randomization. The seed is your user name. Log in with your bot account or, of you have a second account (but do not vote with that) and try again or ask your wiki-friends what they see first. MediaWiki:SeedRandom.js is the implementation in case you are curious. en:Random number generation and en:Random seed for reference (skip all the stuff about cryptography). -- Rillke(q?) 13:27, 16 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Our reasoning is: The galleries are quite long and if a user decides to re-visit them later, they can, if they remember the last image they viewed, simply continue to appreciate our candidates at the position they stopped doing so at the last visit. -- Rillke(q?) 13:30, 16 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, (pseudo)randomization is totally all right, even if it looks like suspicious for naggers like me. --Jklamo (talk) 13:41, 16 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Paine Ellsworth[edit]

No question, just thanks for making this contest available. This page needs a "Feedback" button to supplement the "Ask question" button, doesn't it.

Paine Ellsworth (talk) 16:48, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Paine Ellsworth: Thanks for your thanks ;-) Most people who want to leave feedback just write on this year's main talk page like in the ancient wiki times. -- Rillke(q?) 22:18, 23 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What threw me and may throw others is the "Help and feedback" page, which is where I came from to leave my feedback (not to ask a question). That page just has a FAQ and a button that brings readers to this page – there is a "Discussion" link to the talk page you linked above, however there is no specific "Feedback" link on that page that should link to the discussion page. Since it is a "Help and feedback" page, then that is the page that needs a "Click here to leave your feedback" button to supplement its "Click here to ask a question" button, perhaps in an additional, new section just above or below the "Ask a question" section? Question from Bass-Kuroi[edit]

What's the point of the contest banner being shown to me if I cannot vote?

Bass-Kuroi (talk) 02:14, 24 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Bass-Kuroi: You can still enjoy all the great media files. I suggest to contact Beria (she manages our banner campaign); I guess there is a JavaScript variable that contains the user's edit count which might be checked in advance (before displaying the banner) but I am not sure which the correct approach is here. -- Rillke(q?) 10:54, 24 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Bass-Kuroi[edit]

OK, thank you User:Rillke, but there's the thing: I was slightly pissed-off yesterday when I found that after watching the pictures and surfing throu the entire POTY-thing I found that I was not eligible.

I'm not a great contributor, just do some thing here and there in wikipedia when I found something's missing.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic but I don't "enjoy the media files" as you said. I thought I could make a little contribution voting in this poll (out of guilty of not editing too much), with a low-speed connection, not enough time, only to find that after the teasing, I cannot vote.

And there's more: the legend "Your account is ineligible because you do not have 75 or more edits on any attached SUL account or on Commons" is not a good explanation: "75 or more edits": Where? does wikipedia edits counts too? "attached SUL account or on Commons" What does that means? No link attached to where to find an explanation.

Please, if I'm not eligible, find a way to avoid showing banners where I cannot vote and waste my time (now I'm pissed off).

Thank you.

Bass-Kuroi (talk) 22:25, 24 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Bass-Kuroi: Hello. I am not one of organizers of the contest but I can also try to answer your questions. Yes, Wikipedia edits count too. You can see your SUL (i.e. single user login) account here: [2]. The fact that 75 edits are needed to vote is also written on the main page of the contest (besides other places too). I do not know how difficult it is to make sure that the banners are shown only to people who they apply to, but the explanation on the top page of the contest seems enough to me. (Honestly, if the same thing happened to me, so I would blame myself for not reading it first.) --Jan Kameníček (talk) 22:57, 24 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from Bass-Kuroi[edit]

Jan: Thank you for your answer, now I know a little more about contributions, but it doesn't resolve anything about the main topic (the banner).

I won't blame myself though, the explanation on the top page has bloated fontsize (at least in my navigator) so I needed to scroll down to read the qualifications required to vote; and I have no obligation to read the requirements because I don't care about photography contests, I was bring by a banner.

Just answer my question: What's the point of the contest banner being shown to me if I cannot vote?

Again: Please, if I'm not eligible, find a way to avoid showing banners where I cannot vote and waste my time. Also don't waste my time with inconsequential answers, just ask somebody who know about programming and resolve the banner issue.

Thanks.

Question from Skiwi[edit]

In order to vote for the picture of the year an account needs a SUL. What is a "SUL" and how does a registered user obtain one? (error message is "Your account is ineligible because it is not attached to SUL.", perhaps a link attached to the message would be constructive) Skiwi (talk) 21:15, 28 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I see a SUL is a single unified login. Many years ago I went thru a process to get a common login across all wikimedia wikis. Since that time have had a common login and password across all wikis. Yet I am being told I don't have a SUL. Who do I report this "bug" to? I tried [3], but it insists my home account is [4], NOT. thanks, Skiwi (talk) 21:24, 28 February 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
