Cant upload file[edit]

I am trying to upload file, but it doesnt work. How to debug?--Juandev (talk) 21:59, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

@Juandev: You have version 1.20? I need more info, about it. Can you send me info from console (use file start.bat)? Yarl 15:39, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

Czech promotion[edit]

Not many, but some had came

I am so much happy for VU, that I have set up a promotion project within the Czech community. We have translated the sw itself, we have translated this page and recently, there was a workshop on the wikiconference held recently in Prague, Czech Republic. We also got into the Wikimedia Czech Republic's bulletin Wikimedium.--Juandev (talk) 20:08, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Great! Send some pictures from presentation or photo from Wikimedium, I'll put in on website :). Yarl 17:04, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Enhancement: set login URL[edit]

I would propose to offer a line, to type in full "log in" URL. Now VU is set to add protocol http and path ~/w/api.php to the end of a URL string. I wanted to login in to our chapter wiki and I found out, that we dont have api.php in the w folder, but in mw folder. I dont know why, but it would be nice to have an option - from VU interface or config file settings.vicuna - to add full URL for log in. Note that Commonist had such option in the Settings files:-)--Juandev (talk) 21:37, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Probably no change, right?--Juandev (talk) 08:14, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
@Juandev: I will send you soon test version with this enhacement. Yarl 21:22, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Key to upload[edit]

What is the key to upload files to session? It looks like a date. From which line in exif it reads this information?--Juandev (talk) 18:40, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

VicuñaUploader supports usage of {{book}} instead of {{information}}? Lugusto 04:11, 21 December 2013 (UTC)

I had a similar unanswered request here --Jarekt (talk) 17:07, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
@Lugusto, Jarekt: Yes, but it's now undocumented and poorly coded :). Take a look here. It's scheduled to code it better and create some documentation. Yarl 21:30, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
Many thanks. This hidden feature will be very very useful to me. Lugusto 22:03, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

I came up to the message, which is seemingly wrong, but then When I cam to I saw the translation is correct. I mean Upload summary | ‎Nahrát shrnutí. I think, it would be better to have there Upload file(s) | Náhrát soubory, because, thats the event which happens. You upload files with metadata.--Juandev (talk) 00:00, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

@Juandev: Sorry, but translations are updated only from time to time. Yarl 21:25, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

I made 4 videotutorials, which are available at YouTube in Czech language. I plan to make more with a students of a course.--Juandev (talk) 00:06, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

Great, thanks! Yarl 18:41, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

Upload limit[edit]

It seems to me, that VU has upload limit by the means of file size. I cant upload file, which has more than 200 MB. Is it caused by VU or Commons?--Juandev (talk) 02:38, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

@Juandev: I don't know, it should work. Maybe temporary problem? Yarl 12:35, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Doesn't overwrite existing files in 1.20[edit]

I saw on the wiki/forum that overwriting existing files had been added in 1.18 and I do have that option after I get a warning that it already exists, the only problem is that it doesn't come to anything, no new upload in my contribs and of course no changes to the file itself. Neitrāls vārds (talk) 14:45, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

@Neitrāls vārds: OK, thanks for info, I'll take a look at it. Can you tell me exact name of file you wanted to replace? Yarl 21:24, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
I think I wanted to reupload some 200 or so audio files, it went through them but there was nothing in my contribs I think I tried uploading a single file separately too. I tried clicking the "Fix" button and then "Upload" and also not clicking it (by the way what is the function of the "Fix" button?) Eventually I reuploaded them manually (it's the files in the bottom half of this page in my contribs.) Neitrāls vārds (talk) 18:26, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

Files not uploading[edit]

I'm running Vicuña but it doesn't upload my files. It seems to work fine - in the same computer I have used to upload some thousands of files with Vicuña, last of them a few days ago - and it goes through all stages, but in the end all files show the "upload error" icon and none has been uploaded. I've tried from another computer and it doesn't work, neither.

My computers use Windows XP. Is there any known issue related to Windows XP out of support and Vicuña? Any suggestion will be welcome.--Pere prlpz (talk) 23:29, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

same problem for me under Win 7. - Andy king50 (talk) 08:24, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
In I can see that nobody has uploaded images with Vicuña after April 29th. I'm not sure if it's meaningful.
Btw. I tried to lower Java security settings but Vicuña keeps not working.--Pere prlpz (talk) 14:19, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
Indeed, the problem seems to be broad. It doesnt work for me, nor other people I know.--Juandev (talk) 14:00, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Unfortunately the same problem. I am able to log in (log: “INFO: [] Successfully logged in as Packa, highLimit = false”) but then I am not able to upload any picture (<error code="mustbeloggedin" info="You must be logged in to upload." />). Yarl, could you help us, please? --Packa (talk) 07:08, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

@Pere prlpz, Andy king50, Packa: OK, thanks for info. Unfortunately I'm away from home during this weekend, so probably I'll be not able to fix it now. I'll try to fix it asap, however. Yarl 11:12, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

thanks, will use the time for new images and other things, so take your time off ;-) - Andy king50 (talk) 12:07, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Of course, thanks. Have a nice weekend. --Packa (talk) 15:13, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

...and the same to me. Thanks, Yarl --Packa (talk) 20:07, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Yes, automagically it works again :). Pere prlpz, check you vicuna. Yarl 15:34, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Yes, it works. Thank you.--Pere prlpz (talk) 21:30, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

How to add attribute other_fields to uploaded images?[edit]

Is there a way to add other_fields to images uploaded by Vicuña? I would like to add

|other_fields={{Credit line|Author={{User:Tuxyso/Credit-Text}}|Other=Wikimedia Commons|License=CC-BY-SA-3.0}}

as parameter to the Information template. For an example see, File:Alte Synagoge Essen 2014-Alternative.jpg. I know that there is a field "attribution" in Vicuña, but this only adds the attribution to the license template. Using other_fields of the information template puts the desired attribution at a more prominent place. Thanks for the help. --Tuxyso (talk) 10:21, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

@Tuxyso: would this help? --El Grafo (talk) 12:25, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
El Grafo, thanks a lot for the hint. It works very well :) --Tuxyso (talk) 08:22, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello! I tried your tool and it works good. (I've many problems with Commonist, it stops uploading after one up to 8 files.) Your Uploader has nearly all necessary feature. Nearly? Nearly. The new Media Viewer shows the content of the permission field (information template), but I can't use this field with your uploader:

The same for the field "other_fields". (I'm using this field for my own attribution template.)

I would be happy if these things could be supplemented. Thanks for the tool! --XRay talk 16:07, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

@XRay: could this be a feasible workaround for you? --El Grafo (talk) 08:01, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
Templates are a good way. But: I've stopped working with this upload tool. It was nearly impossible to upload more than 20 files (each round about 10 MByte). A Java error occured while setting the categories. It seems that the tool is looking for more than one category at the same time. And there are much more problems to set description and categories. If one of the errors occurs I can't save the settings. May be my internet connection is to slow (less than 2 MBit/s). --XRay talk 09:32, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your hint again! I just tried to upload with a template, it works! And with more memory for Java hopefully my large files are working. (FYI: I found these keywords for my template: %DESC%, %DATE%, %COOR%, %CATEGORIES%, %LICENSE%)--XRay talk 16:55, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Flag "watch"[edit]

Hello! Is it possible to set the watch flag with the upload? If not, please add this feature. Thank you!--XRay talk 17:11, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

@XRay: Hi XRay, On Commons, GoTo: Preferences, Watchlist, (enable): Add pages I create and files I upload to my watchlist
--Jwh (talk) 21:16, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for your advice. :-) --XRay talk 05:21, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Allow to chose a folder[edit]

Would it be possible to add a feature, when user can choose a folder? In Windows this is handled by OpenFileDialog. This would shorten a time working with VU as the user may specify his/her own folder where images are stored and dont need to click several times every time when uploading new bunch of files to VU.--Juandev (talk) 06:50, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

+1, the possibility to set a default folder would be great. --El Grafo (talk) 07:43, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
"Drag and Drop" works fine with Vicuña. --Jwh (talk) 07:58, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the hint, I haven't tried that yet. However, I use Digikam to manage my pictures, so I usually don't have a file manager open and I fear Drag&Drop won't work with Digikam (can't test that atm, but will do later). --El Grafo (talk) 09:45, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
I use Picasa, a right-click on a picture gives you the opportunity "Locate file on disk", then opens the folder, hightlights the chosen pic, wthin the batch. I don't know Digikam. Have a nice day. --Jwh (talk) 11:42, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
My Picasa-Workflow: Picasa: 1. rightclick image, copy filename to clipboard. 2. Alt-Tab to switch to Vicuna-Window 3. strg-space 4. strg-v 5. enter - et voila, pic is there. Takes around 2 seconds: a rightklick and 3 or 4 keystrokes. --Ordercrazy (talk) 20:56, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
Just tried it: Drag&Drop works with Digikam and Vicuña, so personally I'm good. Still think this might be a useful feature, though. --El Grafo (talk) 21:14, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Well I would be still happy for that option. With drag and drop, there are still some operations to do. You have to open the directory with files and you cannot load directly xml file, which automaticaly loads also images (this is a great feature of VU).--Juandev (talk) 22:52, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Geocoding: camera heading, handling of coordinates[edit]

Hello, I've got two things concerning geocoding:

  1. The geocoding templates (e.g. {{location}}) provide the possibility to specify the direction the camera was looking when a photo was taken through the heading: parameter. For example, a camera pointing west can be noted as {{location dec|23.234|52.637|heading:W}} or {{location dec|23.234|52.637|heading:270}}. Would it be possible to include this in Vicuña? Currently, I have to edit every image again after upload to add the heading (example). I don't need anything fancy, a simple text field to fill out would be enough. Note: If an on-camera GPS unit was used, this information may already be contained in the EXIF data.
  2. This is more about cosmetics, not really a serious bug, but I thought I'd report it nevertheless: I noticed that Vicuña tends to append numbers to the coordinates taken from the EXIF data or even change some digits. Example: The coordinates for this file were 49.942693,11.573851. Vicuna changed that to 49.9426928|11.573851216666666. To me it looks like the decimal degrees from the EXIF are taken, converted to degree-minute-second format for internal use and then converted back to decimal degrees for the upload?

Thanks once more for this great piece of software, it makes uploading photographs much more convenient! --El Grafo (talk) 08:41, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

I personally found faster to use external geo sw GeoLocator, which gives you wiki formant of coordinates with direction. Than you just copy it to VU.--Juandev (talk) 22:55, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
That's a very useful tool, but I usually already have the coordinates in the EXIF, so having a text field where I can simply type, say, "NNE" for the heading would still be much faster. Thanks for the link anyway: I already knew that tool but had completely forgotten about it. --El Grafo (talk) 07:45, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
I've just ordered the Pentax O-GPS1 GPS unit for my K-5, which will write the camera heading into the exif data. So in the not too distant future it would be extremely helpful for me if Vicuna could automatically read that as well and put it into the template. --El Grafo (talk) 07:39, 1 August 2014 (UTC)
@Yarl: At the end of last year, filling the heading parameter from EXIF was implemented in the UploadWizard. Would it help if I dig out the bug report with the EXIF field that needs to be used? Seemed like a quick and easy thing to do … --El Grafo (talk) 10:00, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
@Yarl: I see there's been some activity on Github concerning this – thank you so much for considering implementing this! Don't know if this of any help anymore, but → here is the bug report for UploadWizard I was talking about. The relevant EXIF field would be Exif.GPSInfo.GPSImgDirection. Please DO NOT USE Exif.GPSInfo.GPSTrack (see that bug report for reasons). Cheers, --El Grafo (talk) 09:13, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

VU license[edit]

What is a VU license? Can I manipulate it a little bit?--Juandev (talk) 22:59, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Java Runtime Environment Version[edit]

When I start Vicuña, I receive:

Error: Registry key 'Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment'\CurrentVersion'
has value '1.8', but '1.7' is required.
Error: could not find java.dll
Error: Could not find Java SE Runtime Environment.

Could you help me, please? (Windows XP 5.1.2600) --Packa (talk) 19:07, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

@Packa: Probably there is something wrong with Java on your computer, take a look at similar problems here and here. Yarl 12:52, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, Yarl, the second link have helped. I added line

set PATH=C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_20\bin;%PATH%

as a first line in my \Vicuna\start.bat file. --Packa (talk) 19:06, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Cursor in template[edit]

I dont know, why - maybe depends on language version, but If I am ussing English, the cursor in a description template stays on the beggining of a dialog text: {{en|'''|'''Insert text}}, while in the case of Czech and or user fill of templates it stays out:

Čeština: Napiš sem

Would it by possible to have it always on the beggining with selected filler text, that we can delete filler text and start typing description?--Juandev (talk) 06:30, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Vicuna and PDF documents[edit]

I was trying to upload Bunch of PDF documents using Vicuna, but so far I did not succeed. I can select the file or files but when I make the selection I am getting "No matching files" error. What am I doing wrong? --Jarekt (talk) 02:18, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Probably nothing, if you look at, line 17. I don't really think this should be done on the client side anyway as various wikis may have various accepted files. darkweasel94 10:04, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
@Darkweasel94: Please change this. I had to use Commonist instead.--Kopiersperre (talk) 11:47, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Cosmetic issues[edit]

I would like to propose some small improvements which would make VicuñaUploader (and its products) more acceptable for me:

1. The "Source" field should be editable also for "own works" of the uploader for possible additional texts or tags (e.g. identifier from the personal archive of the author, a project tag of grant or contest motivational projects, categorizing tag template for user's topic projects, camera tags etc.)

2. The "Permission" field should be editable to enable some additional texts and tags related to rights. e.g. {{Personality rights}} warning or agreements of the depicted person, "FoP" tags, user's legal comments or statements related to derivative works, photos taken in private places or photos of private subjects etc. etc. And last but not least, some users prefer to integrate the license tag into the "Persmission" field instead in the separate "license-header" section outside the main "Information" template.

3. The location template

  • should be enabled also in degree-minute-second format output by personal settings
  • should be placed into the "description" field of the {{Information}} template if the user prefers such arrangement in his personal settings.
  • the camera direction parameter (heading) should be enabled (at least manually edited, if none of on-line maps is able to support it)
  • also {{object location}} should be enabled and supported by the map tool (both parallelly or alternatively to the camera location)

4. The date of the photo should be used in {{Taken on}} template to distinguish that it is not a date of last edit or first publication of the photo or the date of creation of the depicted (or scanned) subject. For a date imported from EXIF automatically, {{According to EXIF data}} should be used. --ŠJů (talk) 15:43, 24 December 2014 (UTC)

Source is editable in Settings (cs:Nastavení) - you can change there a source information for the whole batch of files you have in the sesson.
The same for Permisson - you can set it for actuall batch in session.--Juandev (talk) 16:38, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Presentation on Wikimania[edit]

I come up to the conclusion to promote this great piece of software more using Wikimania. So I proposed a tutorial about VU on this event. You are welcome to support it and attend.--Juandev (talk) 16:34, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Feedback from cs users[edit]

Yarl, you wanted some feedback from cs users so here we go:

  1. enable satelite Google imaginery
  2. enable Czech hichhiking maps, available via
  3. enable to retrieve direction from where to where is picture taken and add it to coord template
  4. add extra field for object coordinates (some users argue that the placment of actual coord temp is for the possition of photographer, while some users use it for object coords)
  5. enable whatever target wiki for upload - with actuall version we cannot use it to upload file to our chapter wiki
  6. in Actuall czech version there is a typo, so get the new translation (and if there is something new let me know) to the new version
  7. enable to switch off dropdown help with categories - sometimes it harash
  8. load data layer of videos, such as date of creation
  9. VU is not able to use non-English characters in the name of target gallery
  10. there is a bug, that if you edit metadata of a group of files and then you unselect one, still when you click on upload unselected file is selected and goes for the upload. Thus some users would be happy to have an option to remove file(s) from a bunch at all

--Juandev (talk) 19:29, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

And maybe create a logo icon for VU, that could be easily find on the Desktop.--Juandev (talk) 06:11, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

And maybe also remember the folder to open, not to push user everytime browse category tree to get to the right folder.--Juandev (talk) 06:54, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Juandev, that list will be really helpful. Yarl 08:43, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Geotag bug?[edit]

Although the GPS data in the EXIF are correct, once dragged to the uploader they get a new value for "Longitude".

As an example among others File:Mascarón, Plaza de la Merced, Málaga.jpg Longitude 4° 25′ 2.75″ W is changed into 3° 34′ 57.25″ E, which brings the picture to Algiers instead of Malaga.

Is this a known bug? Can I do something to correct it before uploading?

Thanks --Jwh (talk) 02:20, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

@Jwh: should be fixed now, will be released in version 1.24. Yarl 19:55, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
Merci! --Jwh (talk) 21:49, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Using VicuñaUploader to upload files with metadata in a spreadsheet[edit]

Would it be possible to use VicuñaUploader to upload files with filenames, descriptions and categories in a spreadsheet? Looking at the save file it appears it may be possible to import the xml into Excel, import the metadata and then save back to an xml file that VicuñaUploader can understand. Has anyone tried this before? I just can't get the xml to import into Excel properly so I can tell which heading is which without it causing Excel to not want to export back to xml.

John Cummings (talk) 13:04, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

@John Cummings: Actually, we are working on dedicated app for this, take a look. It will be used by small GLAMs, but there will be no problem with regular upload. Yarl 18:18, 1 December 2015 (UTC)
@Yarl: Amazing, will endorse this morning, I've needed this tool for about 4 years. John Cummings (talk) 09:23, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi, 1.22 doesnt run to us so we are using 1.20. The problem is that every time we run 1.20 there is the dialog window about 1.22. Is it possible to remove such announcment?--Juandev (talk) 09:18, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

@Juandev: No not really... I mean, I can compile vicuna without version checking, but it's not a point. Can you tell me which version of Java you have? (Win+R -> cmd -> java -version). Yarl 17:59, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately not. See:

Wrong username and/or password[edit]

Hi, I'm wondering if there's a general problem, as since this morning I get "Wrong username and/or password" and so I'm unable to load up.

I'm using 1.22 since weeks and all was smooth, I've the latest Java-version. I'm signed in on Commons and Wikipedia, signed-out and signed-in again without any problem - just Vicuña doesn't lime me anymore.

Thanks for any hint. --Jwh (talk) 20:36, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

I had the same problem today. IMO it's a connecting problem with the API of Wikimedia Commons. Wait and try again. May be tomorrow. --XRay talk 20:50, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
Can confirm, I also had a similar problem a few days ago (as well as today), but it worked fine yesterday. darkweasel94 20:53, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
I have the same problem today. It worked yesterday perfectly and very fast. --Tilman2007 (talk) 21:37, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
I must add that neither version 1.20, 1.21 or 1.22 works. All have login problems. --Tilman2007 (talk) 21:39, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for all your feedback. Makes me feel less alone with the problem. So meanwhile we can only wait and edit pictures instead of uploading them. Enjoy your nite or day. --Jwh (talk) 22:48, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

@Jwh, XRay, Darkweasel94, Tilman2007: Hi guys, problem is caused by small change in wikimedia API regarding cookies. If you can, please test new version and tell me if it's working properly: [1]. Cheers, Yarl 23:16, 22 January 2016 (UTC)
It's up again! But as it's getting late, I'll install the new version tomorrow and I'll let you know. Thank you, Yarl! --Jwh (talk) 00:21, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
@Yarl, Jwh, XRay, Darkweasel94: Hi, the login works again, but the the upload function CTRL+U is deactivated and greyed out in the menue.
I've noticed that too, but thought that the reason was that I used the "saved session", so I enabled each file for the upload and all is working perfectly, Btw, I'm still on 1.22 --Jwh (talk) 12:22, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
@Yarl, Jwh, XRay, Darkweasel94: Hi, after re-boot everything works fine. Thanks for the quick response. --Tilman2007 (talk) 12:57, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
Everything smooth now, both with 1.22 and 1.23, thank you! --Jwh (talk) 16:33, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Same problem again... --Jwh (talk) 20:10, 17 March 2016 (UTC) Ooops, now it works --Jwh (talk) 20:11, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Does not start after update[edit]

Hi, today did an update (after a long long time) of Vicuna Uploader and since then it refuses to opent. The shortcut on the Desktop only starts Initializing but it closes after about 2 sec. The "start" icon in the program folder opens a black window with a few white lines and closes immediately. I am a Win 8.1 user. Thanks for help.--cheva (talk) 15:35, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi, could it be that you have several versions of vicuna.jar and that the shortcut points to the wrong one? --Jwh (talk) 16:01, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
I dont think Cheva had several jar files at the same place.--Juandev (talk) 11:16, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Same here, after upgrate there is a inicialising window and than nothing. Win Vista. I am going back to version 1.20. Since 1.20 upper versions doesnt work to me.--Juandev (talk) 11:16, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Same here. Last Version to sucessfully start is 1.20. All others break afer the upgradecheck with an errormsg. Since i'm fine with that version, everythings ok for me :)

Problem with geolocation[edit]

Hello, thank you for that great tool, I love it. But now I saw, there is a Problem with the location data of that Picture File:Spain Andalusia Seville BW 2015-10-23 12-58-03.jpg. Please compare the data in EXIF and what Vicuna made from it: 5° 59′ 32,07″ W in EXIF but Vicuna made 4° 00′ 27,93″ O from it. --Berthold Werner (talk) 17:15, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi, you may want to have a look here. --Jwh (talk) 17:46, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
Ok. --Berthold Werner (talk) 18:11, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

Server error[edit]

When I try to login to Commons with VicuñaUploader, I get a server error. Is it just me or is everybody having this problem? JurgenNL (talk) 21:10, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

No problem on my side regarding this --Jwh (talk) 00:55, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, I will search for the problem on my side. JurgenNL (talk) 08:56, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
I'm getting this problem. Nothing wrong with my login details, it just won't allow me to log in to the server error. --Jwslubbock (talk) 09:52, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
Same problem, V. 1.23, Java 1.8.0, Win 7, login do not work --Tom Jac (talk) 10:36, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
The problem occurs with mediawiki 1.27.0 - with 1.26.3 it works. --Tom Jac (talk) 14:42, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Commonist has the same problem with the new version of Mediawiki. --Tom Jac (talk) 14:46, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Upload count[edit]

This just happened to me: I've uploaded 77 files, but the "upload log" on Commons says 70, I've uploaded all in the same category and here too, the category only has 70.

The little upload window said 77 files and gave no error message, in VicuñaUploader all files have the green button ticked. Weird --Jwh (talk) 01:01, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Guess I know what happened- found already one file with exactly the same name in the folder of my PC (strange that Windows accepts this) there might be more... --Jwh (talk) 01:10, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
Found the other six - same filename exists already on Commons. So my problem in this case is solved. --Jwh (talk) 01:20, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Dupe bug[edit]

There is no restriction to upload exact duplicates, this is a bug. (Normally we get on other upload methods a warning.) PS: I do mention this here because this is a bad bypass of warnings and precautions. The bug report is here User: Perhelion 16:34, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

I've noticed the problem on 1.23 too (maybe on 1.22 before as well), but I see it differently:
The upload check, even for some 30 files in a row, takes less than one second; at the end Vicuña confirms the upload of all the files, but when you check on Commons you've uploaded less files.
After verification it appears that it didn't upload those files where files exist already on Commons with exactly the same file-name
Such I presume that the inititial check w/ the warning is no more done, but Vicuña does not overwrite existing file-names. --Jwh (talk) 21:27, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
The problem still persists. I would place a banner on the the main page, about this problem, because it may cause a lot of problems to our volunteers.--Juandev (talk) 12:51, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
+1 Yes indeed. For example I had to check over 4000 files from "another user" locally with report on Bots request where nobody could help direct to solve this. User: Perhelion 14:09, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
Some of my friend recently tested the lates VU and they indicate different behaviour. So I wonder weather the problem is caused by VU or by Java!--Juandev (talk) 12:08, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
So I have tasted some approches and came to these results:
What happens if you upload file with existing filename via VU?
VU Java OS Behaviour Tester Notes
1.23 1.60 Win Vista VU test for duplicate result as "no duplicate", VU behaves like uploading, VU doesnt upload the file, VU places the file allready existing on Commons into the gallery using the file description from the new upload (in the gallery only), VU tags file as uploaded Juandev (diskuse) 4. 12. 2016, 14:14 (CET) 1.23 got via update
1.23 1.60 Win Vista works properly Juandev (diskuse) 4. 12. 2016, 14:33 (CET) former installation removed
Thus my hypothesis is, that the problem is caused by erronous update. While the previous versions has almost no support files, 1.23 comes with 10 MB of files.--Juandev (talk) 13:46, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

Template:Taken on[edit]

Won't it be an idea to use this template in the date field for those files where Vicuña reads the date from the EXIF? Such it would put the file automatically into the Category:Taken on (date). The feature could be enabled individually in the settings. --Jwh (talk) 08:12, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

How to use another data ingestion template, say Photograph?[edit]

Dear all,

I saw that Vicuna offers the very useful option to use a different metadata ingestion template from Template:Information. However, if i try this modification of Template:Photograph using variables found in the Vicuna github documentation

 |photographer = %AUTHOR%
 |title =
 |description = %DESC%
 |depicted people =
 |depicted place =
 |date = %DATE%
 |medium =
 |dimensions =
 |institution =
 |department =
 |references =
 |object history =
 |exhibition history =
 |credit line =
 |inscriptions =
 |notes =
 |accession number =
 |source = %SOURCE%
 |permission = %LICENSE%
 |other_versions =

there is no reaction. Where do i go wrong? Thank you for considering this problem. Hansmuller (talk) 09:43, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

@Hansmuller: Have you seen Yarl 13:17, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
@Yarl: Thanks. Yes, i saw that page. Perhaps the problem is the remaining empty fields, say |title, |depicted people, |depicted place, |medium etc. or is it BOM ? The new fields must be input by overloading the %CATEGORIES% variable using wikicode? Perhaps there is a working example of such an external .txt file? Thanks, Hansmuller (talk) 09:29, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
I tried your new upload program Pattypan, which is great and by the way solves this Photograph problem! (Do you continue to support Vicuna? It now seems superseded by Pattypan.) Thanks a lot, Hansmuller (talk) 08:10, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

The category search field crashes the whole program[edit]

Many times I have faced this problem. I'm struggling to search and add any Commons categories to the pictures. The problem is related to the automatic scanning for categories in dropdown menus while typing text into the category field. When i've added a category to a picture VicunaUploader forces me to choose the same category over and over again until the mouse cursor and dropdown menus start flickering badly. After this VicunaUploader in its entirety is unusable as it refuses me to press any other buttons or type any text anywhere in the program window. The only option is to close the program and start all over again.

That being said, some process in the category scanning and suggesting breaks the whole program. Happens way too often! --Ximonic (talk) 09:22, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

I see some bugs:

  1. After a restart of the program and load a saved session: i can't never start the upload of the session. The menu EDIT is grey and have no function (select files and else).
  2. I can't upload modification files again (override) with same session (same file names local and online).

not mentioning OS at all[edit]

So, this is another Windows-only *beep* ?? --Itu (talk) 18:36, 25 June 2016 (UTC)

It is a Java program and runs everywhere that you can run Java. That includes at least Linux, OS X and Windows. darkweasel94 22:00, 25 June 2016 (UTC)
That should be mentioned explicitly.
More Questions: Is it for running in the browser? Is it GUI-only? --Itu (talk) 12:21, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
No, it's a Java desktop application. And I'm not sure if it's got a command-line interface. — Sam Wilson ( TalkContribs ) … 16:34, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
There is no CLI right now. Yarl 16:41, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
@Itu: I've made some changes to the main page. Hope that's more clear now? --El Grafo (talk) 15:05, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. --Itu (talk) 16:30, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Doesn't work properly with files whose filenames are different only by number of spaces[edit]

I was trying to upload two files that were, here locally, named:

BH 6389 Historama Ferlach 2002.jpg

BH 6389 Historama Ferlach 2002.jpg

If those are in the same folder, and I load them at the same time, VicuñaUploader does load all of them into the program – but then when uploading just ignores some of them. It does not even warn me that something is wrong and I should fix it. If I had not noticed this, I would just have missed some files that I wanted to upload. Please fix this! darkweasel94 18:23, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

Settings window not display[edit]

We have a problem with settings window, which is not display in full lenght, so we cannot safe settings. The problem encountered on Windows 10, Java 8.101, VU 1.23, 1.22. Only the combination: Windows 10, Java 8.101, VU 1.21 works. While Win 7, Java 8.101, VU. 1.23 works.--Juandev (talk) 08:50, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

But in the case of Win 10 there are other problems with tab Edit, which doesnt work at all. BTW, what to do if we cant write to settings?--Juandev (talk) 09:04, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
The same issue now on Win7, I opened a Github report. I don't understand this because it has worked in the past "one time" (I tested some screen resolutions and deleted the settings). I found a workaround, select the "first tab" and the use the keys Shift + Tab . Forward tab is not working because you get on the textfield which swallow all key tabs to text tabs.
And another bug, I can't upload anymore (the option is also grayed out). (~_~) User: Perhelion 14:17, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
Same problem on Ubuntu MATE 1.12.1 - fortunately there is a protion of Save button so it could be used.--Juandev (talk) 09:07, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
Well after a while upload button disapears from visible area even in the main tab. So finally you cannot use it. Maybe I can try to replace openJDK by Java, but I am lazy. I would probably buy a new ntb with win os.--Juandev (talk) 10:19, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Gallery option[edit]

That looks unlucky! I expected also the filename as %NAME% (as this key is few times used in the tool)!? I mean it is not important, but I guess the file-desc. is usual uniform, so the gallery-file-desc is useless. User: Perhelion 22:51, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

Just a point regarding grammar. In English file name is uniform, but not in flexive languages like Czech or Polish:-)--Juandev (talk) 09:13, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
But you are right. It would be nice to use it in description and wherever it could be used. That would faster our administrative work and give us more time on activities we like.--Juandev (talk) 09:42, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Saving password[edit]

@Yarl: I feel like it’s quite annoying always having to copy in the password. Would be nice if it could be saved (I’d be fine if one would have to manually edit the settings file for this) or OAuth could be used. --Nenntmichruhigip (talk) 18:28, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Bug naming[edit]

It seems the keyword %NAME% is only used for counter naming, which is fully unexpectedly.[2] So the usage of this function is very limited (I've to usage another naming tool). It should be a trivial matter to fix this. User: Perhelion 12:55, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

File order[edit]

I have migrated from Win Vista to Ubuntu MATE and now I realised, that file order is not sorted by name. It is difficult with describing files, when they are not in alphabetical/time order. Is there a way, how to sort them into order?--Juandev (talk) 09:10, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Now I see that the problem is probably OS or Java related, because previously on Win Vista and offical Java, I have just navigated right folder and click open, now doing the same on Ubuntu MATE and (probably) OpenJDK it read files in chaotic order, so I should seletct them (in right order) and open.--Juandev (talk) 09:38, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Cannot edit[edit]

I am having VU 1.23 Java 8 on Win 7 Proffessional. When I load session Edit tab stays green and I cant select All files to upload. This is really boring, especially when you have a lot of files in the batch and you should select them manually.--Juandev (talk) 18:39, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
