Proposal

Various Wikipedia project have an Aviation wikiproject, where the intent of the WikiProject is to improve coverage of aviation in that project. An example is en:WP:AVIATION on English Wikipedia. Similar projects also exist on Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Hungarian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish Wikipedias as well. It is my belief that Commons could do with a similar project devoted to improving Commons (and therefore individual Wikimedia projects as well) coverage of aviation. This could entail many different things; one thing that I have been quite active in is getting permission from various off-WM project photographers for use of their photos on Commons, so one important thing is obtaining required photos. Another thing that would be important is to recruit photographers to become Commoners and upload materials. Then there is things like categorisation, descriptions (I see various templates in use), etc, etc, etc.

I am basically just putting out this feeler to see if there would be interest in creating an Aviation WikiProject on Commons amongst editors, and if so, what would those editors see as being essential goals of such a WikiProject? I also have many ideas which I can go into detail on if there is interest in such a project; ideas which would require collaboration on a wider scale amongst more than one editor (i.e. too much work for one editor).

Comments/ideas/criticisms/proposals/questions/discussion are required/needed and welcomed. russavia (talk) 23:31, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Example of things I believe would be beneficial for aviation on Commons, and which would somewhat require a joint collaborative effort are:

  • Obtaining of permission from external photographers for their use on Commons. Category:Aviation photographers gives you an idea of those who already have given permission.
  • Contacting airlines, airports, aircraft manufacturers, museums, etc encouraging them to donate materials for use on Commons. An example of such useful images are numerous old Finnair photos (can't remember exact photographer now) of which copyright was held by Finnair, but they were going to throw them in the rubbish -- an airliners.net photographer salvaged these photos and uploaded them to airliners.net -- such things are prime candidates for what should be on Commons.
  • Encouraging outside photographers to join the Commons Community and upload directly here. There are obvious issues of usability, etc that there would likely be a requirement for assistance, and showing of the ropes on Commons with such newbies.
  • Categorisation of aviation topics on Commons - establishing uniform and usable categories on Commons
  • Could act as a central location for any requests for photos from editors on other projects.

More ideas, foreseeable problems, etc welcome. russavia (talk) 23:57, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

I would certainly support such a proposal as I believe it could help us coordinate a more comprehensive and balanced coverage of the genre. My photographic contributions have been limited to the only major airport within a short drive of myself (see Category:Leeds Bradford International Airport) and I imagine it is the same for many other users. If we had a project as such we could perhaps provide better coverage of areas where we do not have a photographer on hand. Furthermore we could perhaps gain a clearer consensus on issues such as categorisation. I would say that due to the number of files we now have in this area and the disparities across the project, we could benefit from a more structured approach to this. I would also be enthusiastic to hear what other users could bring to this. Mtaylor848 (talk) 00:53, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments Mtaylor. Can you think of any other useful purposes of a WikiProject? Or what about any negative aspects? I know that you have been involved in categorisation in this area, adding, removing, refining categories. And I do apologise that a lot of it is on my uploads -- I just upload too much that I can only ever have time to do basic and obvious categories. I have noticed in the past that categorisation on Commons often occurs in inappropriate places like a users talk page, or a subsidiary category talk page. Obviously a WikiProject would be a central discussion point on such things. Any negatives? russavia (talk) 02:28, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
I agree. A list of things I think are needed:
  • A good tutorial how to upload a photograph, categorise it and get OTRS certified
  • Maybe even a tutorial how to take a good photo and post-process it
  • Photo guidelines: does wikimedia want artsy sunset photos or 90° side-on photos? How important is something other than sky in the background?
  • List of aircraft without good photos (=wanted photos)
I can't think of anything else other than that, but I'm sure there could be more ... --Biggerben (talk) 10:35, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Totally agree. Some additions:
  • A list of places there useful photos can be found (not only airliners.net but other sites like flickr.com, defenceimagery.mil etc.)
  • A big request page there not only photos but categories, translates, templates and other stuff can be requested by users who are not that familiar with Commons
  • Direct connections with other Aviation WPs so their requests and feedback can be quickly transported here
You can expect my help in categorisation - I see a big, really big way to go in this direction. As I'm making myself more and more familiar with Commons I will try to provide more help in other fields. It's a really great idea! James R. Nockson (talk) 11:55, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Totally agree. The topic should have an outstanding improvement if a kind of inter-wiki cooperation will be put in place. it.wiki aviation project now is fully aware of this proposal and we will follow further developments for sure, giving support. --EH101 (talk) 12:59, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
For my bad English language, is a problem if I express myself in Italian and then someone can translate my thoughts? If I did it directly in English I sometimes use an online translator and I could not understanding...--Threecharlie (talk) 12:30, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
3C, as I mentioned on your talk page[1], English would not be necessary to participate in the project. If you are proficient in Italian, then contribute in Italian, and there will surely be someone to assist if required in Italian. English might be handy, but it is not required anywhere on Commons. russavia (talk) 12:50, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
If there are ways it can be made more straightforward to obtain permission from external websites and photographers, it would be very beneficial to all involved. Otherwise I would echo the opening points you made, Russavia. Cloudbound (talk) 00:57, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
I think this is an excellent idea. Categorisation is something that needs cleaning up. CambridgeBayWeather Talk 13:45, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

New files on Commons - bot/script needed

If you look at User:Bayo/Newpages CVG Commons, an editor has a bot in which new files in the video games category are noted. It would be useful if we had such listings as part of a project, so that things such categorisation, descriptions, clean-ups, etc can occur. Does anyone have the necessary knowledge in how to do such things? russavia (talk) 14:17, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Magog the Ogre has looked at this and it looks like they are lending a helping hand to the project. Further information will be posted either here or at User_talk:Magog_the_Ogre#Commons:Bots.2FWork_requests.23Aviation_images russavia (talk) 01:24, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

JP Airline Fleets 2011/2012

hi all, do any editors have access to the 2011/2012 edition of JP Airline Fleets? Preferably the cd-rom version (for ease of quickly finding information). If anyone has access to this bible, can you please drop a note here, on my talkpage, or via email -- Special:Emailuser/Russavia, as one of the projects i had planned may require extensive use of this bible. If you belong to aviation project on other wikis could u possibly raise this request on that projects talkpage, and link back here. Cheers, russavia (talk) 03:04, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

I have been able to track down a copy of this edition in PDF format, so this request is now fulfilled. Thanks to my "secret" donator. If anyone has any queries on registrations or anything, feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to check it for you. russavia (talk) 09:29, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
I've got the .pdf too. If russavia will not answer you, feel free to contact me (russavia, did you sign up the newsletter? Very accurate: it predicted Italy probably buy 30/35 F-35 less than original order, that is true according to italian Minister of Defence) --Zerosei (talk) 06:19, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

A little prayer

Can you single out the model I uploaded from Flickr in Category:Uzbekistan Airways aircraft cabins? Thanks for yours attentions. :-)--Threecharlie (talk) 16:21, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Some go-rrr-geous and comfo-rrr-table t-chairs are waiting for you !
Looks russian in cabin design, my guess would be something like Tupolev Tu-154. An Tu-154M model maybe ? (if it's the same plane that you can see in his photostream, then for sure it's a Tu-154M) Zeugma fr (talk) 22:48, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Definitely an aircraft from one of the COMECOM countries. The design isn't in keeping with that of Airbus, BAC, Boeing, Douglas, Fokker, Hawker Siddeley, Lockheed or any other western manufacturers I can think of.Mtaylor848 (talk) 16:42, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Definitely a Boeing 747 of an early version, -100 or -200... --M.L.WattsAir Mail ✈ 21:03, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Either a 747-200 or a 747SP. A lot of SPs were operated in the Middle East, so would be 90 percent sure it's and SP. The upperdeck is different to on a 200, so not that. Mtaylor848 (talk) 16:35, 7 January 2012 (UTC)
Er... IMO, the configuration of the doors on the right side of the fuselage makes it clear that the aircraft can't be an SP. 747SPs have a door by the leading edge and one by the trailing edge, but don't have a door above the middle of the wing (as you can see in this line drawing and in this photo). That's what makes me think it's another version, most likely a -200. The upper deck doesn't seem incompatible with the plane being a -200. --M.L.WattsAir Mail ✈ 17:07, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

OK, I find this :-)))--Threecharlie (talk) 09:35, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi 3C, please correct me if I'm wrong:
  • the presence of the drogue parachute suggest it is a Lim-6[...] variant
  • the absence of the SRD-1M radar range finder antenna suggests that it is not a simple Lim-6 and so do the presence of the pilon near the wing root;
  • the photoreconnaissance device under the belly (an AFA-39 camera) suggets it is a Lim-6R.
And here it is: a Lim-6R! --F l a n k e r (talk) 23:12, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Strange

How is it possible that this image which is not relivant "WikiProject Aviation" does appear here, in the recent aviation related uploads? --High Contrast (talk) 15:31, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Quick guess: The file is in Category:DIA Military Art Collection, which it a subcat of Category:Defense Intelligence Agency, which is a subcat of Category:Bolling Air Force Base. Greetings, --El Grafo (talk) 16:00, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
There are going to be some hit and misses with the recent upload bot results, and it is due to the categorisation that El Grafo has mentioned. Not all results will be relevant to this project, but better to get misses, than to miss out on hits I think. russavia (talk) 22:50, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Archiving the talk page

It's been more than half a year since the project was started and I'm happy to see that people are in fact using it: Thumbs up!

However, our talk page is growing and starting to get a little bit confusing, so maybe this might be the right time to think about how we would like to handle the archiving of old discussions. First of all, I think we should go for a automated solution instead of manually archiving single sections. Coming from de.wp, where the mechanisms and bots used are a bit different, my knowledge about how this is usually done at Commons is limited. But Commons:ARCHIVE#Archiving_-_when_there_is_too_much_text has some information about it. As far as I can see, we have two options there:

  • MiszaBot archives sections when the last contribution is older than a certain age (see w:User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo)
  • SpBot archives sections that have (manually) been marked as resolved

I guess there are pros and cons for both options, so what do you think? Does anyone here have experience with those bots/templates and would be willing to do the setup? Greetings, --El Grafo (talk) 09:51, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Good idea. I've been bold and set up SpBot to archive "resolved" sections after a couple of days. Anyone is free to "resolve" or "unresolve" a section as is required. Obviously some discussions can and should take some time to complete, so have not set up Miszabot to archive. I hope I have set up all parameters, etc properly; perhaps someone can give them the once over and make any necessary changes. russavia (talk) 11:14, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Categorisation

Airline fleet categories

We have categories for specific aircraft by airline, but there is no uniformity. For example we have Category:Airbus_A320_by_airline. What would be the preferred format for categorisation of such categories? Personally, I prefer the format Category:Aircraft (airline), as it makes it easier to find categories, particularly when using Help:Gadget-HotCat. Additionally, I began a while ago to standardise the Aeroflot fleet category as one can see at Category:Aeroflot fleet. Category:British Airways aircraft is standardised the other way. What are other's opinions on such categories? We do need some uniformity here. russavia (talk) 13:31, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Agree with you - I like the Aircraft (airline) format. The same thing - Aircraft (serial number). Let's make this a rule amongst aviation photos. Yeah, let's create «Rules» section on our project main page. James R. Nockson (talk) 14:27, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, such guidelines could, and should, be created, so that there is some uniformity across categories. What other categories are which require standardisation/discussion? Start a section for each of these below, so that we can discuss each one separately. russavia (talk) 14:35, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

I personally prefer the former format as it reads better. However I would say that it would be more important to introduce a standard form than to worry about which is chosen. Introducing it retrospectively would be too much work, so I think we should look and see if there is a bot that could take care of that. Mtaylor848 (talk) 16:52, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

It wouldn't be too much trouble to use Commons Delinker to do the moves for us. As I am an admin, I am able to do all of the commands that it needs, I would just need a list of categories which need renaming, and what they are renamed to. Like yourself, I'm not too fussed either way as to format, and am more interested in standardising, and also to make it easier for people to find categories (both for viewing and for categorisation of uploads). We'll what others have to say as well, and we can do any required changes, and perhaps do up some sort of guideline for categorisation. russavia (talk) 17:54, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
I think it’s no easy to choose the Category to standardise the project, each of them has advantages and disadvantage; using the category Category:Airbus_A320_by_airline it is possible to know quickly all the airlines using that type of aircraft, but no the fleet of each single Airline, that is why necessary the Category: Airline fleet too. The “Category: Aeroflot fleet” and “Category: British Airways aircraft” are similar, but I would avoid the list of the registrations in the subcategories instead of the aircraft type. Chesipiero (talk) 15:18, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Aircraft by registration

Just FYI: There is an ongoing discussion at Category talk:Aircraft by registration about whether (and if yes: how) to use the subcats of Category:Aircraft by registration as subcats of aircraft-type- and airline-categories. Since this concerns all pictures of aircraft on Commons in some kind of way, I would really appreciate any input on that (though, sadly, right now I'm not able to spend much time for that myself). Greetings --El Grafo (talk) 11:24, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Prototypes

I want to create meta-category for individual prototypes of aircraft but have no idea how to call it. For exapmle, Yakovlev Yak-38M had two prototypes, one of them is Izdeliye 82-2. Does anyone have any ideas about how to call it and in which categories it should be included (I think at least in Category:Experimental aircraft but experimental aircraft and prototype is different things). Let me make some proposals

Hi to all, I hope you do not mind that I write in Italian to avoid losing shades of my thoughts:

.

English: I think it could be useful to look for other users with graphics skill and get them involved in order to draw the 3-view line drawings great number still missing. Moreover, I think that using public domain software like FlightGear it should be possible to create good quality air crashes pictures. Talking about 3-view line drawings, the web is full of sources useful as a starting point, but extreme care should be spent not to create unauthorized derivative works (and this requires a full knowledge of copyright and rules on this matter)
translated by --EH101 (talk) 13:06, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

If all this is unclear even by using a online translator leave me a message and someone will try to translate it, thanks for your attention. :-) (from it.wiki)--Threecharlie (talk) 08:37, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

English: I think this a very good idea, there are many aviation articles lacking three-view drawings... But that's true, it's difficult to understand where "derivative work" ends and where "own work" begins. For example, I would like to create a three-view table of the Wright Flyer; my question is: is the design of the aircraft copyrighted? I mean, besides the drawings actually made by the Wright brothers, are there restrictions to converting a technical drawing of the Flyer I found on the web into an SVG picture by tracing it out?
--M.L.WattsAir Mail ✈ 12:57, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
English: Regarding the special case of the Wright Flyer: The drawings from their patents ([2][3][4]) should be {{PD-US-patent-no notice}}, so as far as I can see uploading them here and even making dericative works shouldn't be a problem at all.
--El Grafo (talk) 13:14, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you! --M.L.WattsAir Mail ✈ 14:04, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Commenti?
English: I've been thinking about the opportunity to give birth to some kind of aviation-related Graphic Laboratory on Commons. Don't you think we could create a project subpage (for instance Wikiproject Aviation/Graphic Lab, with its talk page of course) that we could use to coordinate our efforts -- for example, we should make a list of wanted 3-view drawings, another list of users who want to contribute and have the skills to do so, and so on... Any comments?
--M.L.WattsAir Mail ✈ 13:58, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
missing 3 view diagrams chase could be done automatically. As you probably know, it.wiki infobox aircraft is already tracking missing images or missing sources. I could easly modify the italian infobox in order to create an automatic category in which all missing 3 view diagram articles will be collected. Having this rough database, next step could be to create/upload/highlight the missing drawings and then propagate them all over other languages wiki. Do you think it will work ? --EH101 (talk) 10:03, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
Sure, I think that's a brilliant idea! Once we have a list of unavailable drawings it will be easier to find or create the right ones. For as far as I'm concerned, go ahead! --M.L.WattsAir Mail ✈ 12:36, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

List of 3 view drawing missing articles. Ready !

Done ! Look at it:Categoria:Voci con template infobox aeromobile senza tavole prospettiche and you will have a list of articles probably missing 3 view article (tavole prospettiche in Italian). Category is automatically updated by it.wiki infobox aircraft which senses presence or absence of such that drawing. --EH101 (talk) 16:34, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

from Chesipiero

Hallo, I think it’s a good idea and a good project. I gave a look to the existing Categories in aviation but there is no uniformity, sometimes no logic and too much categories. Few months ago I loaded some files regarding planes taken at Pisa Airport in the seventies and I loaded in the appropriate aircraft categories, in these days I discovered that it has been created a category “Aircraft at Galileo Galilei Airport” with my files, I think it’s no necessary to create a category like that. People that use Wiki and Commons wish to reach the information or the files as quickly as possible and not to find it with three or four clicks going from a category to another, this is important. I saw category like “Aircraft by airline” and “Aircraft of airline” this is nonsense or categorizing the aircraft by colour as “Red, white and blue aircraft of the United States”. At moment I am working on the municipalities in the Innsbruck-Land District as on Wiki as on Commons, but I’ll be glad to contribute somehow or other, I’ll check this page on the coming events. Featured photo candidates

Hey all, as we have featured photos here on Commons, it is my intention to "work" with photographers who have granted us permission to use their photos as needed, to put select photos thru featured photo processes. We should probably have a section on the project pages where we can put current candidates, so that others are aware that aviation photos are being nominated. For example, at the moment we have Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Colombian Air Force Sikorsky AH-60L Arpia III (S-70A-41) Ramirez-1.jpg being put up for FP. Obviously "aviation" editors would be well-placed to critique aviation photos, so how would we be best to go to "advertise" such nominations to project members? Ideas anyone? russavia (talk) 02:39, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

On the german aviation project the MerlBot does this for pictures nominated locally and on Commons: Wikipedia:WikiProjekt_Luftfahrt/Überarbeiten/MB-BWWORKLIST. The bot seems to be inactive on Commons, but I guess it wouldn't hurt asking it's maintainer … --El Grafo (talk) 10:06, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

New permissions

Hey all, just though I would let you know that we now have an additional 1,000 photos available to us, with {{Airwim}} (Category:Photos by Airwim) - a Belgian photographer, who has a lot of photos from Zaventem, and also from the US. I will add future permissions to this section as well, so that others are aware of them. russavia (talk) 11:06, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

  • Hi! Maybe we should make a special section on the main page of this wiki-project? Because I think such news will be lost on a talk page (it's very big already) but on a main page they will be easier to find. --James R. Nockson (talk) 13:21, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
    • Sure, if people think it would work better that way, I'll leave it for people to come up with the best way to display it, etc. And as I get permissions, I can simply continue to update them; as there will be many more to come in the near future as well. russavia (talk) 23:52, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Uploading files with a Bot

I agree that uploading files fron Flickr using a Bot is very quickly, but not always the files reach the appropriate Category. On February 4, 2013 has been uploaded in Commons:WikiProject Aviation recent uploads a great amount of files from Flickr but none of them went into the right place. One example for all is File:B-HUI (8148398132).jpg that has been directed to Category:Boeing (that reaches 841 files), Category:San (that is a river in Poland) and Category:Pacific Ocean (?). Evidently something don’t worked in the right manner. I think it will be better to solve the problem somehow or other or the categories will be full of incorrect files. Chesipiero (talk) 18:46, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Don't worry: It may take one or two days, but russavia does a good job in cleaning up his bot uploads afterwards. --El Grafo (talk) 19:52, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Chesipiero and El Grafo; any uploads which are still like this will eventually be gotten to. I'm just about to start a massive upload from Flickr, which I will post details about below which I would appreciate any assistance with categorising, etc. russavia (talk) 09:09, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Avail yourself of this opportunity to see some fantastic aviation photos and consider voting if you so desire. russavia (talk) 04:49, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

Tail vs Tailfin

I searched on the wiktionnary and on google, but I didn't get an answer (or didn't understand ?) : is there a difference between tails and tailfins ? Could someone explain it to me ? Gyrostat (talk) 16:32, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

I think "tail" refers to the whole assembly back there, with horizontal and vertical stabilizers and any other equipment that may or may not be back there depending on configuration (APU, engine nozzle, ...). The tailfin, to my knowledge, refers only to the vertical stabilizer. Of course, in a side view, this is usually the dominant part of a tail and it's hard to take a photo of it without also showing most of the rest of the tail. But it's possible. — Julian H.✈ (talk/files) 11:20, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Allright, thanks for the explanation Face-smile.svg Gyrostat (talk) 14:15, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Category:Aircraft tailfins

I have been populating this category, and at this point it seems to be a collection of "airline tail logos". So I propose to rename (or move most of the files) to a new Category:Aicraft tail logos or Category:Airline tail logos, renaming also the sub-categories to: e.g. Category:Aeroflot tail logos. --JotaCartas (talk) 19:22, 23 July 2014 (UTC)‎

Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose Please don't do this, because whilst tailfins are clearly in scope, as they are an essential part of the aircraft, by centreing the category name on the logos, we would then have to seriously start looking at deleting images due to the logos being copyrighted. russavia (talk) 04:12, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Daily gallery updater has failed on Commons:WikiProject Aviation/recent uploads

Hello. This message is to inform you that a daily gallery in your userspace, Commons:WikiProject Aviation/recent uploads, has failed. Due to software limitations, the bot has a hard upper-limit of 1500 files per gallery, while your gallery had 1731 images.

This usually happens because a gallery is too broad, encompassing too many subcategories. Please review the logs here and request that a subcategory be excluded, or narrow your category choice(s).

Please make your request for removal within 4 days, or your gallery will be subject to removal.

Thank you. Magog the Ogre (via OgreBot (talk) 03:27, 15 May 2015 (UTC))

It seems that most of them were come in through batch uploads via Category:Aviation files (check needed). Since they are already in a "to be checked" category, I guess we can do without having them in the gallery? --El Grafo (talk) 16:44, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
I'll exempt this subcategory then. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:25, 16 May 2015 (UTC)

The majority of these files is now taken by bulk uploads from the US DoD (Air Force, Navy, etc). Unfortunately they get uploaded with (usually) one relevant subcat of Category:Aviation, which is never the same. Is it possible to exclude a category that is not a sub-cat of Category:Aviation, for example, Category:Images from DoD uploaded by Fæ? Ariadacapo (talk) 16:02, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Ariadacapo sugested last week to exclude Category:Images from DoD uploaded by Fæ, I believe it is a good idea givent that the majority of the files aren't related to aviation. Wouldn't that solve the 1500 files limit? Gyrostat (talk) 08:35, 8 July 2015 (UTC)
