Can I use examples of Aboriginal art from my community?

We do not have festivals or similar to do with our Aboriginal community- at least, our specific area. However, we do have a good lot of artworks done by indegenous peoples around, and that's easy to take photos of. Would that be okay? (I say this as someone not Aboriginal. • See Derivative works. In many circumstances, the artist who made the original art retains the copyright to their work, and someone else taking a photo of it does not transfer copyright to the photographer. There are many exceptions where it might be ok; for example older works that are copyright expired public domain, or in situations where "freedom of panorama" is allowed. The laws are different in different countries. Check out the links for more information, or if there is something you can't find an answer to, please ask with more specifics (eg explain what, where). Is my video acceptable?

I want to participate with a video which shows stunning traditional dancers in Yap (Micronesia).

I cut the original footage and rendered it, so there are no EXIF information. Is this OK?

The dancers are traditionally dressed, that means, the nipples of some ladies are visible. Does this count as "pornographic and explicit images"? --Plenz (talk) 21:41, 26 March 2025 (UTC)

Traditional toplesss is not "pornographic" nor "explicit", and there is no prohibition of that here on Commons. I do suggest you include a "topless" category (eg "Category:Topless dancing women" or something similar appropriate) so anyone who prefers to filter such things out can do so. Location

Could it please be made clear to participants to include basic information about what and where is shown in the photo? (For example I've been seeing photos of buildings, plazas, events with no information other than "Mexico". Mexico is a large country with many regional traditions, and often identifying the state, city or town makes an image much more useful. Hidden categories named "Images from Wiki Loves Folklore..."

This is my first time participating in this contest and I have a question. Sorry if I chose the wrong place to ask it. Question: When I upload photos for the contest, they are automatically placed in two hidden categories: "Images from Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 in [country]" and "Images from Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 to check". Now I see that some photos have been removed from the "Images from Wiki Loves Folklore 2025 to check" category. What does this mean? And will such photos take part in the contest? I don't expect my photos to be worthy of any prizes, but I'm still curious. Thanks in advance. Vsatinet (talk) 11:38, 1 April 2025 (UTC)

Upcoming Deployment of the CampaignEvents Extension

Dear WLF organizers and participants,

We have some good news for you! As potential interested stakeholders, we would like to share with you that the Connection Product team at the Wikimedia Foundation is enabling the CampaignEvents extension on Wikimedia Commons by the week of September 15th.

This extension is designed to simplify the management of community events, projects, and campaigns, such as yours! In addition to facilitating the discovery and participation of all contributors in these events. Once it's enabled on Wikimedia Commons, organizers will have access to features that will help communicate with participants, as well as plan, organize, and promote events/campaigns/projects on Wikimedia Commons, without having to rely on external platforms.

The features of the extension are:

• Event Registration: A tool that helps organizers and participants manage event registration directly on the wiki.
• Collaboration List: A global list of events and a local list of WikiProjects, accessible at Special:AllEvents.
• Invitation List: A tool to help organizers find editors who might want to join, based on their past contributions.

Good news! Following up with my last message, the Connection Product team has launched the CampaignEvents extension on Wikimedia Commons today.

More details are available on Commons:Event organizers. The features now available are:

• Event Registration - A tool that helps organizers and participants manage event registration directly on Commons.
• Collaboration List - A global list of events accessible at Special:AllEvents.
• Invitation List - A tool to help organizers find editors who might want to join, based on their past contributions.

Please note the extension comes with a new user right. You will need to have this right to use Event Registration and Invitation List.

Regarding Invitation List, please be aware that this feature will not be as useful to Wikimedia Commons in its current form. However, it was made available so people can try it out and give suggestions to the team on how to improve it for Commons.
