Некрополь представляет собой целый ритуальный комплекс, состоящий из 99 надземных двух- и четырехэтажных каменных склепов. Иногда это место сравнивают с долиной фараонов в Египте. Историки датируют некрополь XIV-XVIII веками нашей эры. Первостроителями некрополя yказывали монголов, ногайцев, кобанцев. Но учёные утверждают, что город мёртвых возвели аланы, предки осетин. Есть версия, что на рубеже XVIII и XIX веков в горных ущельях Даргавса бушевала эпидемия чумы, унесшая жизни десятков тысяч людей. Больные целыми семьями с детьми на руках, дабы не заразить своих соседей, уходили в заранее построенные склепы, где и умирали. В результате население Осетии сократилось с двухсот тысяч в конце XVIII века до шестнадцати тысяч к середине XIX века. Если эта версия справедлива, то Даргавский некрополь - крупнейший в мире памятник чуме.
