    Summary

    [edit]
    Description
English: The Galician Karaites are a historical Karaite community in the city of Halych (Ivano-Frankivsk region), a Turkic-speaking people who came from Crimea (probably in the 13th century) and received privileges from Danylo Halytsky, creating a separate community that decreased over time, leaving behind a unique Karaite cemetery. The modern territory of the cemetery is 23 hundredths of a hectare and currently has 223 burials, on which tombstones or their remains have been preserved. The graves are arranged in rows from east to west. The front side of the tombstones is oriented to the north. When burying the deceased, the place for the grave was chosen near the graves of relatives, so burials of different times are located nearby. The oldest monuments date back to the mid-18th century. There is an assumption that they include the tombstone on the grave of the head of the community, Joseph, whom the Karaites called Ha-Mashbir, that is, "the one who distributes knowledge." Epitaphs on some monuments are engraved in ancient Hebrew. On others, a Polish translation of the deceased's name and an indication of the years of life according to the Gregorian calendar are given. Epitaphs are found in Ukrainian and Polish, which only indicate the name and years of life. There are also inscriptions in the Karaite language in Ukrainian and Polish transcriptions. The cemetery-zeret is a unique monument of Karaite history and culture, the only one preserved in Galicia. Most of the Karaite monuments are located in Crimea, in particular in Yevpatoria and Bakhchisarai. The Karaite cemetery is a historical monument of local importance. Unfortunately, a significant number of graves and tombstones are in a state of disrepair. And for further research, photo recording is very important in order to preserve historical information.
