Summary[edit]
Invisible Predation (under siege).jpg |
English: The myxomycete cell (black) very slowly, about 1 mm/hour, narrows the ring around the bacterial colony, being on a white substrate. It is impossible to notice any change with the naked eye, only if you use time-lapse shooting. Usually, myxomycetes (amoeboid fungus-like organisms) easily absorb bacteria, single-celled algae and fungal spores. However, in this case, the bacteria produce a substance that acts as a repellant, "frightening" the huge myxomycete cell. It is possible that the compound has antibiotic activity or may be able to inhibit the growth of dysenteric amoeba, a human parasite related to myxomycetes. This remains to be seen in future researches.
