Tousley, H. S.,, 1825-1895,, photographer. [Portrait of Harold M. White] [Keesville, New York] : [Horace S. Tousley], [between 1860 and 1862] 1 photograph : albumen print on card mount ; mount 10 x 6 cm (carte de visite format) Notes: Photograph shows a head-and-shoulders portrait of Harold M. White (1832-1862). White graduated Union College (Schenectady, N.Y.) in 1856 and was admitted to the bar in 1859. By 1860 he was practicing law in Wapsinonoc (near West Liberty), Iowa. In 1861, at the age of twenty-eight, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 11th Iowa Infantry, Company H. Military records show he "died of general debility brought on by exposure" while stationed at West Liberty, Iowa, December 3, 1862. Title devised by Library staff. "Harold M. White"--pencil inscription on front of photograph mount. DLC "Harold M. White my brother Benjamin's college chum. He enlisted in the army during the civil war & died on Dec. 3, 1862. He was in the battle of Shiloh & came out unharmed but was prostrated by fever & after months in a hospital the end came. His remains were bro't to his home in Camillus for burial"--pencil inscription on back of photograph mount. DLC Photograph is housed in an album. Album page has decorative gold borders framing the print. DLC "Harold M. White, in the battle of Shiloh, died of fever Dec. 3, 1862"--inscription on album page below photograph.
