Notes: Photograph shows Sarah "Sally" A. Cadwallader Ely (1836-1918), seated, facing front, holding a book. Ely taught at Camp Todd and Camp Rucker, freedmen's villages in Virginia, outside the Washington, D.C., area in the mid 1860s. She married Samuel S. Ely, a civil war veteran, in 1870. Title devised by Library staff. Date based on the years H.C. Phillips operated alone at 9th and Chesnut Streets, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. "No. 10026"--on back of card mount. DLC "1868" is written on the bottom of the print and "Sally Cadwallader Ely" is written across the bottom of the photograph mount. DLC Photograph is housed in an album.
