Description
English: A stone wall memorial plaque for Hugh Christopher Gurney inside Saint Mary's parish church in the village of Northrepps, Norfolk, England. He was the son of Christopher and Dorothy Gurney of Northrepps Hall. Hugh Gurney who's army career began in the 5th Battalion of the Royal Norfolk regiment was a member of No. 2 squadron of the Special Air Service. Along with 60 other men he was sent behind enemy lines on August 19 1944. There task, known as 'Operation Wallace', was to attack the retreating army of Nazi Germany and destroy there communications. He was shot and killed while withdrawing from an ambush on a German transport truck in Velorcey. He was buried at the Velorcey Communal Cemetery in France.
