We, looking back, can seethat the Gothic style might have been distin-guished either by the semi-cnxular or the pointedarch. In Germany and Italy the former archheld its own and continued to be used rightthrough the Middle Ages. In England, how-ever, the pointed arch soon gained a decidedvictory over its rival. Many theories have been putforward concerning the introduction of thepointed arch, one amongst them being that itwas the result of the intersection of two roundarches such as is very commonly found in lateNorman work (64); another theory is the poeti-cal idea that it was copied from an avenue of trees.It is quite certain in any case that this form ofarch was known in the East for centuries before itreached Europe, having been found in cisterns andtombs in Egypt and Arabia dating from long beforethe Christian era.
