From Norman to Gothic. 53 The building consists of nave and chancel, witha central tower which is very low and stumpy.Under the eaves is a row of corbels grotesquely carved, and others of a not very re-Church, fined character may be seen in the nave. The accompanying illustrationshows the partial subsidence of the chancel arch,which was found to have been loaded with loosesand. This arch bears the usual Norman mouldings,and some of the nave capitals are vigorously carvedwith leaves and incised stars. The chancel andthe north nave wall have retained their originalslits, the other windows having been altered andenlarged. Considered as a whole this earty Nor-man church, although of larger dimensions, doesnot show a very marked advance on the earlierSaxon churches of Bradford-on-Avon and elsewhere.We know however, that the Norman builders wereat work in this country—or the Saxon masons wereworking in the Norman style—for some years be-fore the Conquest, for Edward the Confessor em-plo
