Title
02D6A2 post medieval belt fitting
Description
English: Early post medieval copper alloy sword belt fitting, 60mm long, 40mm wide and weighing 25.54 grams. The object consists of a moulded sub rectangular plate which has a central oval suspension loop protruding from its lower side. The plate has the remains of two rivet holes just above the edges of the loop. Between the two rivets the object is decorated with a series of vertical raised lines, these terminate with a raised border which becomes two scrolls, terminating level with the rivets. On either side of this the object is decorated with a buckle, one still clearly shows its pin. At the other side of each buckle is a moulded terminal which is semi-circular in section. Suspended from the loop are two identical fittings, one has snapped half way along its length. They consist of a folded over length of metal, 40mm long, which is heavily decorated on one side. The complete example bulges out to accomodate an intricately worked bearded face with a small sphere above his head. Below his pointed beard is a scroll and what appears to be a Tudor rose where the object terminates. There is a rivet on the reverse of this object very close to its lower edge. The second object has snapped off just below the bearded face.
