Monument to Lt Colonel Alexander Gordon – Monument to the King's German Legion

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The first two munuments erected on the Battlefield of Waterloo were the Monument to Lt Colonel Sir Alexander Gordon, erected in 1817 ►(File:18_June_1805_–_Victory_at_Waterloo_–_Monument_Gordon.jpg), and the Monument to the Hanoverians (King's German Legion), erected in 1818.
Two more monuments were also built soon after the Battle : the Monument to the Prussian Army at Plancenoit, in 1818, and the memorial to the Count Wilhelm von Schwerin near the center of Lasne, both much futher away – which shows the extent of the battelfield.

The more eye-catching Lion's Mound ►(File:18_June_1815_–_Victory_at_Waterloo,_memorial.jpg) was built from 1823 to 1826.
Upon completion of the Lion's Mound, most if not all paintings and etchings available to 19th c. tourists were showing these three monuments, generally depicted from about the same viewpoint, e.g. ►(File:18_June_1815_–_Waterloo_–_L'Arbre_Picton.jpg).

A few more monuments would only appear around 1900, first to the Duke Friedrich-Wilhelm von Braunschweig, in 1890. And more about one century later.
