Title
18th centruy convict penny, view two of two
Description
English: Copper alloy worn penny 35mm in diameter, max 1mm thick and weighing 8.35g.
It is a late 18th/ early 19th century 'Convict Love Token', made by wearing down the surfaces of a cartwheel penny and then engraving them with pictures and/ or messages. They were tooled by convicts, often whilst at the quayside, before being shipped off to Australia, and were intended for their loved ones.
This particular Convict Love Token depicts an incised scene on one face while the reverse is apparantly blank.
For published examples of these tokens see Convict Love Tokens, ed. by Michele Field and Timothy Millett, 1998 (Australia).
