Description

In 1939, Ernesto Maserati designed the 4CL to compete against the powerful Alfa Romeo Alfetta 158. To save weight in the construction, the 4CLs were designed to utilize more aluminum alloys than any previous Maserati Chassis. The 4CL earned five victories before the outbreak of war; when racing resumed the 4CL proved to be in a class by itself. For 1948 the inline 1.5-liter engine was upgraded with twin superchargers; a new tubular chassis was designed to address the increased torque, denoted by the "T". The new CLT also gained hydraulic dampers with forged suspension components at the rear. The updates all helped to take Maserati to the next level when it debuted at the San Remo Gran Prix in Formula One's first season. This car (chassis 1599) was built in 1949 for Automobile Club Argentina and under the Scuderia Achille Varzi banner was raced by Juan Manuel Fangio. It was raced in Europe by Fangio before returning to South America for the 1950-52 seasons.
