Summary[edit]

Description

The railway line between İzmit-Ankara started operating on 27 November, 1892. The first railway station was a small and modest structure and it was inaugurated with a ceremony. The residents of Ankara flooded in the railway station to participate in the ceremony and to see the very first train which came to the city. A new railway station was decided to be constructed in 1934. Sabri Şekip Akalın, a 25-year old architect working for the Ministry of Transport, was assigned for the construction works. The new railway station, the construction of which started on November 3, 1935 was completed on September 2, 1937 and put into service on September 30, 1937.

30 Ekimde hizmete girdi. Ertuğrul Şevket’in iki yıl sonraki yazısının başlığına bakılırsa, “Avrupanın En Modern İstasyonu Ankara Garı”ydı:

“Türkiyenin kalbi güzel Ankaranın yeni garı, bu kalbin atışını tanzim eden, kanlarını etrafa dağıtan canlı bir uzuv gibidir. Ankaraya ayak basanın karşısına yapısının sağlamlığı, güzelliği ve temizliği ile yeni Türkiyenin timsali gibi çıkan gar, yolcunun gözlerini dinlendiren, muhayyelesini şehirde göreceği harikalara hazırlıyan bir manzara teşkil eder.”
