English: Saint Glycerius obelisk in Milan, Italy. It was inaugurated as a "crocetta" (pillar topped by a cross) honouring Saint Glycerius, a bishop of Milan, by Charles Borromeo on June 11 1607. It stood originally in the Bottonuto area (now replaced by Piazza Diaz square), and it was moved to its current location in Via dei Boschetti (near the Public Gardens) on October 1st 1787. For the occasion architect Giuseppe Piermarini took care of the new arrangement, which now sports a bronze star in place of the cross. |
