Description 80-G-46238: Standing in the stead of his son, Sergeant Herbert J. Thomas, USMC, who sacrificed his own life to save those fighting with him on Bougainville, Herbert Thomas, received from Secretary of Navy Forrestal the Medal of Honor awarded the heroic Marine. Examining the medal with him is Mr. Forrestal’s office at Washington, D.C. are Audrey I. Thomas, sister of Sergeant Thomas, and the Sergeant’s nephew, Donald Herbert Hildreth. Released August 3, 1944. U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/07/05).
