Summary[edit]

Description

This is the back of the document with local identifier 86-WWT-79-1. It was scanned by a Wikimedian at the National Archives ExtravaSCANza. Full metadata and descriptive title will be added when it is cataloged by NARA staff. It contains the original caption:

SHE'S WORKING ON THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD—Mrs. Rose C. Penna, 20, whose husband is entering the Signal Corps, is typical of the women now filling the jobs of Men who have gone into military service. The Long Island Rail Road has women cleaning engines, as Rose is doing here; operating signal towers, tidying up coaches and guarding crossings. All are inspired by the realization that each is freeing a man to fight the Axis or for other essential war work. They're holding the jobs until the men return. (All photo rights released.)
