is has been a heavy week for theFatherland. On the following Sunday was held the 174 A CAPTIVE AT CARLSRUHE yearly service for the dead. There were sixor seven hundred people present, againmostly women, and again all in black. Manyof them wept sUently throughout the ser-vice, others gave way now and again toaudible outbursts of grief. I could only see jone living German soldier, but who shall saythe spirits of how many dead were there ? A Polish Baptism In our walks abroad we have frequentlypassed a humble little chapel, which has beenbuilt for the numerous Poles who work onthe farms in the neighbourhood. One Sun-day forenoon in October, when hints andhopes of peace were in the air, I accom-panied the padre and the Roman Catholicparty in camp to this chapel, and waswitness of a very interesting and picturesquebaptismal ceremony. The low-roofed room with its humblealtar at one end, its walls hung with thestations of the cross, and perforated withwindows showing the golden dying glories
