Text Appearing Before Image:
when the statue of QueenElizabeth was placed on it. It was evidently intended to bea pendant, both in position and style, to King Edwards Gate. The structure between the Hall and the corner of thecourt, in a plain classical style, was built by James Essex1770-75. It contains the Combination Rooms on the first-floor, with part of the kitchen-offices below, and chambersabove. The Hall, built by Nevile, 1604-8, should next bevisited. Note the beautiful Renaissance porch at the top ofthe steps. Before entering the screens take a view of theGreat Court, best seen from this point. Note that none ofthe angles are right angles; that no side is of the same lengthas the side opposite to it; that no principal building on anyside is in the centre of that side; and that the Fountain isnot at the intersection of the diagonals. Trinity College 41 The Hall was copied from that of the Middle Temple,London, both in dimensions and ornament. Note especiallythe open roof and the carved work of the screen.
