Title |
A fragment / sherd of later medieval or early post-medieval floor tile (1400 - 1600) |
||
Description |
English: A fragment / sherd of floor tile probably dating to the later medieval or early post-medieval periods (1400 - 1600). The fragment is sub-rectangular in both plan and cross section and measures 63.8mm in length, 50.2mm width and is 16.9mm thick. It weighs 67.1 grams. The fabric of the tile is a mid-red orange colour with a number of angular and sub-angular grit like inclusions. There are also a number of similarly coloured angular and sub-angular pottery / tile inclusions. This suggests that this tile has been tempered with broken tiles. The surfaces of the tile also differ, the upper one and two side have been worn and exhibit areas of polishing, where as, the lower surface is fairly rough and cracked. There is no evidence for mortar on any of the surfaces of the tile. This suggests that they were laid either on a bed of sand or straight onto the beaten earth floor.This floor tile was found at the same time as the five roof tiles described in record HESH – 352D41 |
