Text Appearing Before Image:
General hypertrophy—external characters. places more than six lines in thickness. The bones of*the male are alwayslarger and more distinctly developed than those of the female, and the bones ofpersons who take much exercise than those who are indolent, or inactive. Bylabor, their weight and dimensions increase ; their spongy structure diminishes. 830 DISEASES AND INJURIES OF BONES. CH AP. VIII.
Text Appearing After Image:
Hypertrophy involving both the thicknessand length of the bone. whilst the compact becomes harder and more dense, and acquires an almost rock-like solidity; the muscular prominencesFig. 321. are rendered more conspicuous; in short, every- thing indicates that they are in a state of gene-ral hypertrophy. The osseous tissue usuallycontains a due proportion of animal matter, and on this account does not readily yieldunder external injury. The adjoining cuts are excellent representa-tions of general hypertrophy of the femur of aman affected with tertiary syphilis. Fig. 319is a section of the bone exhibiting its interiorstructure, which is very much condensedthroughout, except at the superior extremity, where there are still some remains of theareolar tissue ; the medullary canal is entirelyobliterated, and the weight of the bone isnearly twice as great as in health. Fig. 320shows the external appearance of the bone. The drawings are from a specimen in mycabinet. The adjoining sketch, fig. 32
