They rushed forward with the inspir-ing Rebel yell, and with Stewarts brigadeenveloped the Illinois troops. In ten minutesthe latter melted away under the fire, and wereforced from the field. In this engagementJohn A. McDowells and Veatchs Federalbrigades, as well as Hildebrands, were demol-ished and heard of no more. Hurlbut and Wallace had ad-vanced about eight oclock, so that Prentisss was now crowded on ashorter line, a mileor more to the rear ofits first position.
