Description
Route map showing a journey completed by Captain Wellby as a route-finding exercise from Addis Ababa to the White Nile, of which the Sobat River is a tributary.Comprises plane table sheets numbered 1 to 19 and covers a journey mostly within south-western Abyssinia from Addis Ababa 400 miles south-westwards to Lake Rudolf. The route continues southwards into British East Africa and around the southern tip of Lake Rudolf, returning northwards into Abyssinia. It continues for a further 400 miles north-westwards to the Sobat River and across the border into Anglo-Egyptian Sudan to Nasser. Portrays hydrology, relief by form lines and spot heights, trees and woods, tracks, settlements, camps and place names, and includes topographical and operational notes.Plane table surveying undertaken by Shahzad Mir.Note: The spelling 'Adis Abbaba' is used on the map face.The folio (manuscript: coloured ink and pencil on paper; 39 x 21cm) is titled 'Signs used in Map.'
